Harry Potter Season 2 to Recast Major Character

The show hasn’t even premiered, but key cast members are already leaving. Production on the first season is finishing up this month, and the team is already planning a new cast for the second season.

HBO has ordered a second season of the Harry Potter series well before the first season even airs this Christmas. However, the role of Ginny Weasley will be played by a different actress in Season 2. Gracie Cochrane, who played Ginny briefly in Season 1, will not be returning and the part is being recast.

Ginny Weasley Is Being Recast

Gracie Cochrane and her family announced that she will be leaving her role as Ginny Weasley in the HBO Harry Potter series after the first season. They shared that this was a difficult decision, but Gracie is looking forward to new opportunities. She expressed deep gratitude to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for making her time working on the show so memorable.

We respect Gracie Cochrane and her family’s choice to leave the HBO Harry Potter series after season one, and we appreciate her contributions to the show. We wish them all the best moving forward.

The new Harry Potter series will star a completely different group of actors. It’s always disappointing to see actors replaced, but it’s especially poignant when it involves young performers. While the reasons for Sophie Cochrane’s departure haven’t been released, she originally won the part after a very competitive audition process with thousands of hopefuls.

HBO hasn’t announced who will play Ginny Weasley yet, but she really comes into her own in Season 2. While she has a quick appearance when Mrs. Weasley sees the boys off at the Hogwarts Express, it’s in the second book that Ginny arrives at Hogwarts and becomes a significant character.

The upcoming Ginny Weasley series will feature Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow will play Professor Dumbledore, with Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.

Harry Potter Season 2 Will Welcome a Fan-Favorite Character

The show is bringing back most of the actors from its first season, but hasn’t revealed who will play Voldemort yet. There were reports that HBO wants to keep the identity of the actor a secret until the show premieres. Excitingly, Season 2 will introduce Arthur Weasley, a beloved character from the books.

Although no actors have been officially cast yet, revealed he’s interested in playing Arthur. He added, “I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, so I’d definitely consider it.”

Harry Potter Season 1 premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Dec. 25.
