Man Of Tomorrow’s Brainiac Star Breaks Silence On Playing DCU Villain

The DCU’s new Brainiac opens up about the upcoming Superman fan film, Man of Tomorrow.

James Gunn wrote and directed Man of Tomorrow, the fourth film in the DC Universe. David Corenswet stars as Superman, and Nicholas Hoult plays Lex Luthor. These two enemies must work together to defeat the villain Brainiac (played by Lars Eidinger). The cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

Michael Eidinger is joining the superhero world! In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor shared how he got the part and what drew him to the DCU villain he’ll be playing. Though he’s famous for his work in dramas and on stage, Eidinger said it surprisingly felt easy to transition into this new genre when he signed on for Man of Tomorrow.

Even with this big change in roles, Eidinger doesn’t think working on superhero films like Man of Tomorrow is much different from his usual projects. He explained that while Superman stories are full of action and aren’t realistic, they still focus on strong emotional stories. He believes most Superman narratives have a natural “deep psychological element” to them.

Eidinger drew parallels between Brainiac and Shakespearean plays. He noted that the iconic Superman villain, known as one of the hero’s greatest foes, explores similar ideas of corruption, power, and morality found in Shakespeare’s work. Eidinger also shared that his stage experience unexpectedly helped him prepare for the role.

David Corenswet being cast as Superman wasn’t something Eidinger had ever envisioned for himself. But now that it’s happening, he feels confident playing the villain and believes the role was meant to be his.

Brainiac, created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, first appeared in Action Comics #242 in 1958. Typically, he’s shown as a robot from the planet Colu. He roams space, stealing cities by shrinking them and keeping them in bottles, then destroying the planets they came from. He once captured Kandor, the ancient capital of Krypton, and in some versions of the story, he’s even responsible for Krypton’s destruction.

Man of Tomorrow will release in theaters on July 9, 2027.
