Be warned, this article reveals major plot points from the Law & Order: SVU season 27 finale, episode “Monster.” The season ended with a particularly disturbing villain, but Olivia Benson’s actions were a highlight. Despite a setback when crucial evidence was deemed inadmissible against the kidnapper, there was a positive outcome. Ultimately, the finale emphasized the strength of the bond between Benson and Stabler.
Even though it’s been over ten years since Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni played partners Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler on SVU, their on-screen connection is still remembered as one of the best in TV history. Fans have hoped for a romantic relationship between the characters since 1999, and they were a truly dynamic team.
I’ve always been fascinated by Benson and Stabler’s relationship. It was clear they’d become incredibly reliant on each other, and when Stabler left after season twelve, it really seemed to throw Benson off balance for a long time. The shows have definitely hinted at a romantic connection between them over the years, and while it hasn’t always been straightforward, it’s always been compelling to watch.
Stabler had a quick appearance in season 27, briefly reuniting with Benson after Cragen’s passing. With Law & Order: Organized Crime ending, many fans want to see Stabler rejoin Special Victims permanently. But considering how well Benson and the team handled things in the season 27 finale, they seem to be managing perfectly fine on their own.
The dynamic between Benson and Stabler – including his tendency towards violence – doesn’t resonate as strongly with audiences today as it did during the original run of the show from 1999 to 2011. As Law & Order: SVU heads into its 28th season, it’s interesting to think about how the season 27 finale prepares us for what’s next for Mariska Hargitay’s character.
Law & Order: SVU Season 27 Shows That Benson’s Team Has Her Back
After years of feeling alone following Stabler’s departure, Benson truly deserved a reliable team. By the end of season 27, she was confident she could always count on her colleagues, including Detective Griffin, who proved to be a dependable partner despite a rocky start.
It wasn’t surprising that Rollins backed her after she returned, and Fin always had her back whenever Ice-T appeared on the show. Curry proved to be a loyal ally, even though she was the same rank as Benson. If Griffin hadn’t turned against Tynan, she could have faced losing her job at the end of season 27.
Benson had a final, meaningful exchange with Tynan, but the season truly ended where it should have – with her surrounded by her team at Griffin’s bedside. While Mariska Hargitay is the show’s lead, the rest of the cast in season 27 felt like a true team, supporting each other, and that’s a fitting reward for Benson.
Could The Stabler Era Be Over For SVU?
For more than ten years, Benson and Stabler were a strong team, but when Stabler returned for Organized Crime, he quickly brought new complications into Benson’s life. They had finally started to find a comfortable working relationship last year, appearing together on both Organized Crime and SVU. However, by the end of season 27, it’s clear that Benson has fully moved past her time focused on Stabler.
She’s left behind the time when Stabler was still with the NYPD. If he’d been her partner in the season finale, he likely would have been overly protective, especially since she was suspended. This could have led to him getting angry and causing even more trouble for her.
It was fitting to see Benson apprehend Tynan and celebrate with her team, but it likely wouldn’t have happened if Stabler had been a full-time cast member again. According to showrunner Michele Fazekas, they decided against an earlier plan to have him appear in the season finale.
I considered having him appear in the season finale, but I’m glad I didn’t. The scene with Velasco and Benson in Episode 20 felt like the scene I would have written for Stabler and Benson in the finale, and I actually preferred it being Velasco.
Look, I’m not saying Christopher Meloni should never come back, and I don’t think Stabler ruins the show now. It’s just that, as a longtime viewer, it feels like Benson is actually stronger and happier without him constantly by her side. The season 27 finale really drove that home – seeing her surrounded by Fin, Rollins, Curry, and Griff, her real team, felt so much better and showed how far she’s come.
I’ve been watching Law & Order: SVU for years, and I was really touched by what Olivia Benson said to Amaro – that she grew more with him in just four years than she did in twelve with Stabler. It really highlighted how limiting that earlier partnership was for her. While I absolutely loved those early seasons with Benson, Stabler, Munch, Fin, and Cragen, I’m so glad to see Benson thriving now. It would be fantastic to see Meloni guest star occasionally, but only if it allows Benson to keep evolving. She’s found her strength and built an amazing team, and she doesn’t need Stabler anymore. It’s incredibly empowering to watch.
