The excitement surrounding LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight clearly shows how much people loved the Batman: Arkham series. Games like Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City, Batman: Arkham Origins, and Batman: Arkham Knight were so popular that they’ve become the standard for how many fans see Batman’s world, and they’re eager for another Batman: Arkham game.
The world of the Batman: Arkham games, often called the Arkhamverse, has seen two new releases recently, but both have limitations. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League wasn’t well-received due to its live-service format, and Batman: Arkham Shadow is only available on the Meta Quest 3/3S. For years, fans have been hearing rumors about a new Batman: Arkham game, and a recent debunked claim has left them particularly disappointed.
A supposed leak recently appeared on the online forums 4chan and Reddit, suggesting that Rocksteady Studios was developing a new Batman: Arkham game based on the Batman Beyond storyline. The leak included pictures and plot details, but journalist Jason Schreier quickly debunked it on ResetEra, calling it “fake.”
It’s good the recent fake leak was exposed – one Reddit user playfully called it a complete takedown by journalist Jason Schreier. However, the leak gained traction because fans are really hoping for a Batman Beyondinspired Arkham game. The idea of a futuristic, cyberpunk Neo-Gotham fits well within the existing Batman: Arkham* universe, making that concept appealing to many.
Some users doubted the leak’s authenticity. For instance, Zeeisrage commented that the supposed ‘Nemesis System’ seemed too good to be true, suggesting it wasn’t believable. Others, like XxRedAlpha101xX, expressed disappointment that there hasn’t been a new, modern Batman: Arkham game released for current consoles and PCs.
Surprisingly, some Batman fans aren’t sure they’d be excited about a new Batman: Arkham game from Rocksteady, even if it continued the story of Batman Beyond. One user, Die-Hearts, pointed out two main reasons for this hesitation: the disappointing launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and the fact that many of the original developers who worked on the Arkham series have left Rocksteady.
It’s been over a decade since a new, dedicated Batman: Arkham game from Rocksteady, and it might be too much to ask them to recreate the magic of the original trilogy with their current team. Other studios like WB Games Montréal, Camouflaj, and TT Games have shown they can capture a similar feel and gameplay style, but Rocksteady still faces the biggest challenge as the creators of the Arkham universe.
It’s going to be really interesting to find out what Rocksteady is actually developing when they’re ready to share it. Until then, fans can likely rely on Jason Schreier—maybe not the source we want, but the one we need—to help separate reliable information from questionable rumors about a new Batman: Arkham game.
