The current season of Chicago Med wraps up in May, leaving the doctors and nurses facing serious danger as they await a potential twelfth season. While they typically avoid the immediate life-or-death situations seen in Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D., the season eleven finale brings the threat inside the hospital with an armed fugitive on the loose.
NBC didn’t make fans wait until the last minute to find out if Chicago Med would be renewed. The network is still committed to the popular One Chicago Wednesday lineup, which has been very successful and even allowed for the biggest crossover event in the franchise’s history in 2026.
We probably won’t have final details until the show’s summer break, but there’s already some interesting news. Season 10 marked a turning point with Allen MacDonald taking over as showrunner, and that change has brought a welcome energy to the series.
The recent seasons have been difficult for the characters on the show. Sharon Goodwin’s near-death experience in season 10 of Chicago Med led fans to worry S. Epatha Merkerson might leave, and a two-part episode in season 11 featuring Dr. Charles felt like a farewell to Oliver Platt. As season 12 approaches, the future of Hannah remains unclear.
Despite some cancellations in other shows from Dick Wolf’s television franchises, the One Chicago series remains popular, with Chicago Med leading the way as the first show airing on Wednesday evenings.
Chicago Med Season 12 Has Been Confirmed By NBC
NBC surprised fans of the One Chicago shows by announcing renewals before the spring finales. Chicago Med received the green light for a 12th season in March, meaning 21 more episodes were on the way. However, the good news was quickly followed by a tense two-part episode that put Dr. Charles’s life in serious danger.
Because Chicago Med rarely kills off main characters, watching one in genuine danger can be particularly upsetting. With no plans for a showrunner change – unlike Chicago Fire – Allen MacDonald will likely continue to build tension and raise the stakes now that the show has been renewed for a twelfth season.
When New Episodes Of Chicago Med Will Release?
Although NBC hasn’t announced an exact return date for Chicago Med, we have some information about season 12. The show will continue to air on Wednesdays as part of the One Chicago lineup, starting the night at 8 p.m. Eastern Time this fall.
As a big TV fan, it looks like Med might be back on the air sooner this year – 2026 – than it was last year. NBC’s fall schedule is out, and it says The Voice and this new show Line of Fire – which I’m excited about because it brings Peter Krause back to primetime – are both starting in September. If the rest of their shows follow suit, that means we could be seeing Med in September instead of having to wait until October like we did last time!
NBC is keeping its Wednesday night lineup as is for the fall season. Everything else is changing: Line of Fire moves to Mondays, the NBA takes over Tuesdays, The Traitors will air with Law & Order and SVU on Thursdays, and Newlyweds will be the new Friday night show, replacing the cancelled Stumble, which had a strong start.
What Chicago Med Season 12’s Story Could Be
Most of the time, after a season of Med ends with a suspenseful cliffhanger, the show skips ahead in time when it returns in the fall. While storylines like Connor and Ava’s sometimes continue across seasons, this is unusual; typically, each season starts relatively fresh.
If Hannah has a healthy baby and a smooth pregnancy, skipping ahead in time from May to September could represent the length of her maternity leave. This would also give Archer an interesting story arc, and hopefully allow the character Sean to reappear.
In season 11, Archer’s son handled the surprising news that his dad was going to have a baby with his former crush surprisingly well, and his reaction brought some much-needed humor to the storyline.
Season 12 could use some lighter moments, depending on how Dr. Charles handles the betrayal by his potentially manipulative coworker. Meanwhile, Dr. Lenox probably won’t receive positive updates about her illness, and Frost might need the summer to recover from dealing with his family.
It’s possible that Chicago Med will lose some cast members. All three shows in the One Chicago franchise let actors go last summer, and some roles still haven’t been fully replaced. For now, fans can look forward to the show returning in the fall and can rewatch old episodes on Peacock.
