Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin Is Getting a Sequel 15 Years Later With New Director

Good news for Tintin lovers! Steven Spielberg is officially working on a sequel to The Adventures of Tintin again.

As a huge fan of The Adventures of Tintin, I was thrilled to hear Peter Jackson dropped some exciting news at Cannes! Apparently, he and Fran Walsh are actively working on a new script for a sequel. He even shared on X (formerly Twitter) that he was writing it during the festival! He seems genuinely excited to be returning to that world, and honestly, that makes me so happy. It’s the best news for Tintin fans in ages!

Jackson explained why he ended up directing the second Tintin movie instead of Spielberg. They had agreed Spielberg would direct the first, and Jackson the second, but fifteen years passed before Jackson was able to make his film, which he felt uncomfortable about.

The Adventures of Tintin Brought Hergé’s Beloved Reporter to Life

The first Tintin movie, released in 2011, was a collaborative effort from some of today’s most celebrated filmmakers. Steven Spielberg directed the animated film, and the script was written by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright, and Joe Cornish. Peter Jackson served as a producer alongside Spielberg.

Jamie Bell played Tintin, with Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock and Daniel Craig as the villain, Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine. The story follows Tintin, his dog Snowy, and Captain Haddock as they hunt for the treasure of the Unicorn, while being chased by Sakharine.

The first film was inspired by three books from the Tintin series: The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn, and Red Rackham’s Treasure. Critics generally liked The Adventures of Tintin, and it did reasonably well in theaters, earning $374 million globally on a $135 million budget.

Fans Have Been Waiting 15 Years for The Adventures of Tintin 2

As a big film fan, it doesn’t really surprise me that a new Tintin movie has been a long time coming. I mean, Spielberg was already thinking about adapting it back in the 80s! He actually picked up the rights not long after Hergé, the creator, passed away in 1983, so it’s been a passion project for decades.

When The Adventures of Tintin came out, Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, and producer Kathleen Kennedy all seemed confident a sequel would happen. In a 2011 interview with Collider, Kennedy even said they were aiming to finish the script by early 2012, begin filming using motion capture in the summer of 2012, and release the movie by mid-2015.

I was so excited about a potential sequel to Tintin, but it was frustrating to hear how often the project seemed to be delayed. Every time I’d ask about it, one of the three producers would suggest it was further off than we thought. I remember Peter Jackson, while promoting The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey back in 2012, said they wouldn’t even start the motion capture until 2013, though he still held out hope for a 2015 release. It felt like a long wait, and ultimately, it never quite came to fruition.

I was so excited when Spielberg announced they were aiming for a Christmas 2015 release for Tintin 2! Unfortunately, it never quite came together. Peter Jackson later shared that filming probably wouldn’t start until 2016, which meant we were looking at a possible release date sometime in late 2017 or early 2018. It’s been a long wait, but I’m still hoping to see it eventually!

It took another three years for fans of Tintin to receive encouraging news. Jackson confirmed the sequel was still in development, though a script hadn’t been completed yet. While Anthony Horowitz had previously written a script, he shared in 2016 that it was ultimately rejected.

After eight years, Jackson is now working on the script for the next Tintin movie. He hasn’t said which stories it will be based on, but before the first film, The Adventures of Tintin, came out, he mentioned that he particularly liked The Seven Crystal Balls, Prisoners of the Sun, The Black Island, and The Calculus Affair.

As fans continue their wait for Tintin 2, they can stream The Adventures of Tintin on Paramount+.
