ABC Officially Decides The Rookie Spinoff’s Fate

Okay, folks, big news for fans of the series! I’m happy to report that the future looks bright, especially when it comes to the upcoming spinoff. Everything I’m hearing suggests it’s full steam ahead, and that’s a relief!

ABC has officially ordered a full first season of The Rookie: North, starring Jay Ellis. The season will have ten episodes, and ABC plans to announce the premiere date when it releases its 2026-2027 schedule on May 12th.

What Is The Rookie: North Going to Be About?

Created by Alexi Hawley, the creator of The Rookie, this new series follows Holland as he joins the Pierce County Police Department in Washington. Like the original series’ John Nolan, Holland is inspired to change his life after a dangerous and traumatic encounter with criminals.

Joining Nathan Ellis, The Rookie: North also stars Chris Sullivan as Sergeant Nix and Janet Montgomery as Charlotte Dru, Holland’s trainer. The show features new rookie officers Odell Chance and Elora Howe, played by Malik Watson and Karen Fukuhara respectively, alongside their training officers, Leah Mizuno and Mark Lewis.

What Can Fans Expect from The Rookie: North When It Premieres?

Although The Rookie: North takes place in a new location, far from the original The Rookie‘s Los Angeles, there’s still potential for characters to appear in both shows. Unlike The Rookie: Feds, which was canceled after one season, The Rookie: North is expected to have a longer run. According to creator John Hawley, crossovers between the shows could happen, perhaps with “a couple episodes, or two or three episodes a season,” whenever a suitable storyline emerges.

Hawley also highlighted aspects that weren’t fully developed in The Rookie or The Rookie: Feds. He previously noted that Pierce County, Washington, stood out as an ideal location because it offers a diverse range of environments – from the city of Tacoma and a large military base, to upscale suburbs and typical shopping areas, as well as a national park and mountains.

Watching that show felt totally different than anything I’ve seen set in a major city, and I loved that! It just had a completely different energy. Noah Hawley explained that the show isn’t like a typical police procedural either. We don’t start with a crime and solve it by the end of the hour. It’s more about the suspense of not knowing what’s going to happen next, and that’s what makes it so enjoyable to watch.
