Neon’s Horror Movie Exit 8 Is Already a PVOD Hit

The movie Exit 8, inspired by a unique video game, is doing well on streaming platforms. It became available for home viewing only a month after its limited theatrical release and is quickly finding its audience.

The movie Exit 8 has quickly become popular on the Apple TV Store, climbing from its initial debut at No. 13 to reach the Top 10 in the U.S. This happened just recently, only one month after its theatrical release. If Exit 8 continues to gain momentum, it could soon overtake Send Help, another well-regarded horror film currently at No. 9, as that movie’s ranking begins to fall (according to FlixPatrol).

There Is No Escape From Exit 8

The movie, inspired by the indie horror game The Exit 8, was directed by Genki Kawamura, who co-wrote the script with Kentaro Hirase. It follows a man (Kazunari Ninomiya) lost in a subway station with a never-ending, looping corridor. Each time he goes through the loop, he must turn back if he spots anything unusual, or he’ll be forced to start over from the beginning.

The movie Exit 8 has received very positive reviews, earning a 93% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s currently the highest-rated film ever made based on a video game. The next best video game adaptations are 2024’s and 2021’s Werewolves Within, both with scores of 86%. Exit 8 is also popular with audiences, earning an 86% audience score, meaning both critics and regular moviegoers generally enjoyed it.

Exit 8 Is an Unsettling Watch

The horror film first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year and then was released in Japan last fall. It has since earned $44 million globally, making it a financial success considering its low production cost of about $1.4 million, especially with a small cast and simple location. While it earned under $4 million in US theaters, not quite reaching its full potential in cinemas, the film is now gaining popularity with viewers discovering it on demand.

Exit 8 is available on PVOD platforms.
