Darth Maul, one of the most iconic villains in Star Wars, is finally getting his own series. Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will explore the full extent of his power as he pursues vengeance against those who have betrayed him, even his former master.
Okay, so Darth Maul is super intimidating, right? But honestly, when you look at the bigger picture of the Star Wars galaxy, he’s not even close to being the most powerful Sith Lord ever. There have been so many others who were way more powerful and would absolutely dominate him. He’s scary, sure, but there are genuinely terrifying Sith from the past who would easily defeat him and show him where he stands in the pecking order.
Darth Bane Is One of the Strongest Sith Lords to Ever Live
Darth Bane is arguably the most well-known Sith Lord from before the events of the Skywalker Saga. He lived a thousand years before the prequel films and established a core rule for the Sith: only a master and one apprentice could exist at any given time. He also developed the “Grand Plan,” a long-term strategy to destroy the Jedi that wouldn’t succeed until long after his death.
While much of Darth Bane’s story exists outside of the main Star Wars storyline in what’s known as Legends, he’s still considered part of the overall Star Wars universe. Even a millennium after his death, the Jedi still speak of him with fear, demonstrating the lasting impact he had on the galaxy. In fact, a ghostly figure resembling Bane appears to haunt Yoda during events in Season 6 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Darth Bane originated from a time long ago. He was incredibly powerful – so much so that he’d see Darth Maul as a minor annoyance, easily dealt with. Maul wouldn’t have been able to compete with anyone even remotely close to Bane’s level.
Darth Tenebrous Is an Underrated Sith Lord
Okay, let me tell you about Darth Tenebrous. He’s not a household name like some Sith Lords, but trust me, this guy was powerful – even more so than Darth Maul, if you can believe it! He’s best known as the mentor of Darth Plagueis the Wise, and while Plagueis took a lot of Tenebrous’s ideas and ran with them, I think Tenebrous himself really deserves more recognition. He was a seriously formidable figure, a true innovator who helped shape the dark side as we know it.
Originally named Rugess Nome, Tenebrous was a Bith—a species not commonly associated with the Force. Despite this, he spent years researching the Force, hoping to master the microscopic lifeforms called midichlorians. His studies led to a method of transferring consciousness into new bodies. Ultimately, he intended to use these midichlorians to become the legendary “Chosen One” and surpass all previous Sith in power.
Darth Tenebrous was a remarkably knowledgeable and powerful Sith Lord, though he died before he could put his plans into action. In contrast, Darth Maul preferred to fight with his anger rather than dedicate himself to learning. While Maul’s rage has been effective at times, it ultimately holds him back from overcoming a more disciplined and skilled Sith opponent.
Darth Plagueis Was Stronger in the Force Than Maul
Darth Plagueis isn’t the most well-known Sith Lord in Star Wars, but he was incredibly powerful. Born as Hego Damask II, he was a Muun who learned the ways of the dark side from Darth Tenebrous. Living over a century, Plagueis played a key role in the Jedi’s eventual defeat.
Darth Plagueis was renowned for his incredible control of the Force. While many Sith relied solely on anger, Plagueis approached the Force as a scholar, studying it deeply. He even uncovered new ways to control midichlorians, and developed a Force-healing ability that could save people from death. In contrast, Darth Maul wasn’t as skilled with the Force, often letting his emotions control him.
Despite being ultimately killed by his student, Darth Sidious, Plagueis played a crucial role in the Jedi Order’s destruction. He initially told Sidious about certain key information and was also key in developing Sidious’s strategy to gain political influence by appearing as a respected public figure. Even though his death was ignominious, Plagueis was far more powerful in the Force than Darth Maul.
Darth Vader Easily Beats Maul
Anakin Skywalker was predicted to bring peace to the Force and defeat the evil Sith. However, he turned against the Jedi, embracing the dark side and becoming Darth Vader. As Darth Vader, he joined Darth Sidious, taking the place of Darth Maul in Sidious’s plan to destroy the Jedi and take control of the galaxy.
The final episodes of Shadow Lord bring Darth Vader and Darth Maul into direct conflict. Their battle quickly reveals Vader’s superior strength; he effortlessly deflects Maul’s attacks without much effort. Maul, realizing he’s outmatched, is defeated and narrowly escapes with his life.
Darth Vader’s full potential is limited by the severe injuries he sustained during his fight with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith. He lost several limbs, which reduced his connection to the Force. However, even with diminished power, Darth Vader is still far more skilled with a lightsaber, stronger in the Force, and more filled with rage than Maul.
Darth Sidious Taught Maul Everything He Knows
Darth Sidious was an incredibly powerful Sith Lord. He honed his connection to the dark side over many years, learning from his master, Darth Plagueis. He steadily gained power, becoming first the Republic’s Chancellor and then its Emperor. Ultimately, Sidious orchestrated the near-total destruction of the Jedi Order, leaving only a few Jedi scattered and in hiding.
Sidious trained Darth Maul from a young age, teaching him the ways of the Force and the Dark Side. He skillfully controlled and mistreated Maul, turning him into a loyal servant. Even after Maul gained some independence, Sidious always maintained control and held the advantage.
The power difference between Darth Sidious and his apprentices was never more obvious than in his duel with Savage Oppress on Mandalore during Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Sidious, unusually, personally fought both brothers at the same time, easily overpowering them. He swiftly demonstrated he was a far more powerful Sith Lord, defeating and killing Savage Oppress, and severely injuring Maul. This encounter definitively proved the master’s superiority over his apprentices.
