Warning: Spoilers for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord season 1, episode 10
The first season of the new animated Star Wars series recently finished with ten episodes. Episodes nine and ten, titled Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, premiered on Disney+ on May 4th – also known as Star Wars Day – and were full of surprising twists and reveals. The final episode, in particular, was packed with action, featuring intense lightsaber fights between Maul, Devon, and their Imperial opponents.
The first season follows Maul one year after the events of Revenge of the Sith. He’s seeking revenge on criminals who betrayed him, and during his quest, he encounters a young Jedi apprentice named Devon, whom he decides to train. Maul’s actions eventually draw the attention of the Empire, culminating in a major showdown in the tenth chapter.
Chapter 10 really embodies what Maul – Shadow Lord is all about. The show fully embraces the Star Wars universe, especially the prequel era, and includes lots of moments that fans—particularly those who watched The Clone Wars—will appreciate.
The first season of Maul – Shadow Lord connects directly to the events of The Clone Wars, and is filled with hidden references to the larger Star Wars universe. Some of these nods are obvious, while others are more subtle and meant for dedicated fans. Importantly, the series strikes a good balance between these references and its own story, making sure everything enhances the characters’ journey.
Maul Taking Down An AT-AC
In the climactic scene, Maul impressively destroys an AT-AC walker, tearing through its structure until it collapses. True to his style, he then simply walks away, continuing his battle against the Empire. This moment really highlights just how formidable Maul remains, despite all he’s endured.
Sharp-eyed viewers might notice this scene is a nod to the video game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. In that game, the character Galen Starkiller destroys an AT-ST walker in a comparable way. Sam Witwer played Starkiller in both the original game and its sequel, and he later became well-known for voicing Maul in animated Star Wars projects.
Maul And Devon’s Force Connection
Throughout the first season, Maul and Devon share a powerful bond, but Devon struggles with whether to trust him or end their connection. Their relationship is full of tension, illustrating how quickly a Jedi could turn to the dark side. They often communicate not through words, but through the Force.
In Chapter 9, Maul connects with Devon using the Force, sharing information about his location. This is similar to how Luke and Leia connected in The Empire Strikes Back, and Kylo Ren and Rey connected in The Last Jedi.
In The Empire Strikes Back, Luke uses the Force to reach out to Leia for help after fighting Darth Vader. Later, in The Last Jedi, Snoke connects Rey and Kylo Ren through the Force, hoping to draw Luke and Rey into a trap. Even earlier, Snoke – secretly controlled by Palpatine – manipulated a young Ben Solo with the Force, contributing to his turn to the dark side.
The Force has always been a uniting power within this series, and it looks like that’s happening once more with the connection between Maul and Devon.
Laser Door Sound Effect
The series includes another subtle reference to one of Darth Maul’s most iconic scenes. During a flashback sequence in Chapter 8, where Maul relives painful memories of being separated from his brother, viewers can briefly see and hear elements from his final duel in The Phantom Menace. Specifically, the sound of the laser door from Episode I is used during this moment.
Starting with The Phantom Menace, George Lucas, Dave Filoni, and others have significantly developed the character of Darth Maul, transforming him from a largely silent assassin into a much more complex figure. This deeper characterization not only fuels compelling stories, like those in Maul: Shadow Lord, but also adds new layers of meaning to his original appearance in The Phantom Menace. Consequently, when the story references his past, it feels particularly impactful.
Ralph McQuarrie Inspired Imagery
Chapter 9 had a seriously awesome moment that reminded me of how it all began! We were watching Maul, Devon, Lawsen, and the rest of the crew try to escape the planet with Dryden Vos’s help, and then, out of nowhere, Darth Vader showed up! Seeing him standing there facing them was chilling – it really cemented why he’s one of the scariest villains in all of Star Wars, even in animated form.
This scene isn’t just scary; it’s visually striking. The image of Darth Vader standing in the shadowy forest at night strongly recalls early artwork by Ralph McQuarrie for the first Star Wars novel, Splinter of the Mind’s Eye. Both the new series and the original book cover feature Vader looming in the forest, emphasizing the danger he represents to the heroes.
Marrok’s Investigative Skills
Marrok, an Inquisitor first seen in the 2023 series Star Wars: Ahsoka, is back in Maul: Shadow Lord. He’s helping the Empire figure out what Maul is up to on the planet, and he’s teamed up with another familiar Inquisitor. Marrok is also connected to a particularly obscure Easter egg within the season.
He’s shown investigating a crime scene and using his Force powers to find Maul and his team. This is similar to what Cal Kestis does in the video games Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor, where the hero also relies on the Force for investigation. It’s a small detail in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, but fans – particularly those who played the Jedi games – will likely appreciate it.
