Alan Moore, a highly respected comic book writer, is well-known for his dislike of the comic and film industries. He feels he’s been unfairly denied money he’s owed and creative control over adaptations of his work. He often objects to film versions of his comics because they don’t translate well from the page to the screen. Adaptations like From Hell, Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, and particularly The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen were all considered weak and failed to capture the unique qualities of Moore’s writing, reinforcing his frustration with the process, especially given his lack of input.
Alan Moore generally dislikes seeing his work adapted into other formats, to the extent that he often requests his name be removed from the credits. However, there’s one exception: a single adaptation he actually approved of, and it’s widely considered a truly exceptional piece of work.
How Justice League Unlimited Gave Us The Best Alan Moore Adaptation
The first season of Justice League Unlimited featured an episode based on Alan Moore’s famous Superman story, “For the Man Who Has Everything.” Like the original comic, the episode centered on Batman and Wonder Woman’s efforts to rescue Superman from the Black Mercy, a parasitic alien plant that held him captive in a dream where Krypton never exploded. Dwayne McDuffie, the show’s lead writer, revealed that Alan Moore was happy with the adaptation and gave permission for his name to be associated with it.
What sets the Justice League Unlimited version of “For the Man Who Has Everything” apart isn’t just that it’s a faithful adaptation of Alan Moore’s work – it’s how dramatically it reinterprets the story. The original comic gradually turned Clark’s dream into a disturbing experience, pushing him to let go. In contrast, the cartoon presents a perfect paradise throughout, making his return to reality much more heartbreaking and his victory over Mongul all the more satisfying.
The story didn’t stop at adding emotional layers. By portraying Clark as a farmer married to a combination of Lois Lane and Lana Lang, the film emphasized how much Earth meant to him – even more effectively than the comics. It also created a heartbreaking scene for Batman, where a plant called the Black Mercy showed him a false reality of his father saving his parents, only to shatter the illusion and force him to relive their deaths.
Alan Moore usually dislikes adaptations of his stories that stray from the original material. However, he approved of how Justice League Unlimited altered his story, “For the Man Who Has Everything.” This shows the changes actually enhanced the story’s emotional impact instead of detracting from it. The episode is exceptional and widely considered one of the best adaptations of Alan Moore’s work ever made.
The DCAU Is Still One Of The Best Versions Of The DC Universe
The exceptional quality of the animated short “For the Man Who Has Everything” perfectly demonstrates what made the DC Animated Universe so special. The DCAU excelled at both creating original, memorable stories and cleverly adapting comic book tales into concise, engaging formats. They often streamlined those stories and characters, focusing on their strongest aspects. This adaptation of “For the Man Who Has Everything” is a nearly perfect example of the DCAU’s ability to distill the essence of the DC Universe.
As a huge animation fan, I still think the DC Animated Universe – even though it wrapped up two decades ago aside from a few films – is easily one of the greatest interpretations of the DC world ever. It just consistently delivered amazing stories, so it doesn’t surprise me at all that it’s home to the only adaptation of an Alan Moore story that the famously critical author himself actually approves of.
