Is Widow’s Bay A Real Place? Filming Locations & Inspiration Explained

The Apple TV+ series Widow’s Bay takes place on a remote New England island of the same name, establishing a chilling and unforgettable setting. Viewers might find themselves wondering if this eerie location is actually real. The island is portrayed as a dark, damp, and isolated place, but the mayor, Tom Loftis (played by Matthew Rhys), believes he can transform it into a popular tourist spot like Bar Harbor.

Widow’s Bay is an imaginary island, but it’s incredibly well-developed and believable. Similar to famous fictional locations like Camp Crystal Lake, Derry, Maine, Silent Hill, and Crockett Island, it feels like a real place with a long, dark past – making it an ideal backdrop for a story about mysterious fog and sinister clowns.

Mayor Loftis is right – this place could actually be a nice getaway. Like any good spooky location, it has a certain appeal. Widow’s Bay is a perfect example, with charming coffee shops right next to restaurants with fun names like “The Salty Whale.”

Even if you don’t enjoy spooky tours of places like Amityville or Salem, you might find this location interesting. While Widow’s Bay is fictional, it’s based on real places that are worth exploring.

Where Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay Show Was Filmed

Given that Widow’s Bay is set on a New England island, it’s not surprising the show was filmed along the Massachusetts coast. While the series doesn’t explicitly state which state Widow’s Bay is in, a character mentioning childhood summers spent in Massachusetts hints that the island is likely part of Massachusetts.

Filming for the series took place at Vita Bella Ristorante in Essex, Massachusetts, which may have been used to represent the fancy restaurant, Salty Whale, that a character wants to keep open to attract a New York Times journalist (Bashir Salahuddin), according to TheLocalNews. Vincent’s Bar in Worcester served as one of the limited number of bars on the show’s island setting, as reported by Telegram.

The show was primarily filmed in Rockport, Massachusetts, particularly on the Bearskin Neck peninsula (according to AtlasOfWonders). A scene featuring Loftis’s son, Evan (played by Kingston Rumi Southwick), smoking in a car was filmed at White Wharf in Rockport’s harbor. The Town Hall in Berlin was used as the setting for the Town Hall in the fictional town of Widow’s Bay.

Throughout the show, the harbor scenes were filmed at Lane’s Cove in Gloucester, located on the north side of the city. The building used for the outside of the Salty Whale was once an art gallery called Dark Star Philosophia. The exterior shots of Widow’s Bay Inn feature the historic Lorenzo Maynard mansion in Maynard, which is about 25 miles northwest of Boston. The church seen in the show is Martha-Mary Chapel in Sudbury, Massachusetts.

What Inspired The Town Of Widow’s Bay For The Apple TV Show

Kate Dippold, who created the show Widow’s Bay, has shared that her childhood in 1980s New Jersey was the inspiration behind the series (according to TheWrap). She and her friends used to walk past a local house rumored to be haunted, and she wanted to recreate the shared experience of being scared, which always ended up with them laughing together.

You can definitely see the echoes of other films in this show, most notably Jaws. It’s fascinating how both this story and Spielberg’s classic feature a small-town mayor desperate to keep the tourists coming, even when there’s a clear and present danger threatening everyone. It’s a really interesting parallel, and one that adds another layer to the show for me.

As a big fan of Stephen King, I definitely got that vibe from Widow’s Bay – it really feels like one of those isolated small towns he’s so good at creating. It reminded me specifically of a story like ‘Home Delivery,’ with that sense of a community bracing for the worst. And you can absolutely see the influence of Mike Flanagan’s ‘Midnight Mass’ in there too. But what’s really cool is that Widow’s Bay doesn’t just feel like those things – it’s its own story. The creator, Dippold, has done a great job building a truly unique setting and plot, which is impressive in a genre that’s already so full of similar ideas.
