Netflix is planning a new series based on the world of Narnia, potentially arriving in 2027, but it’s expected to be a very expensive production.
I was listening to the latest episode of Matthew Belloni’s podcast, and he dropped some fascinating news about the upcoming Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew reboot. According to his sources, this movie is shaping up to be a massive investment for Netflix. He says it’s either going to be the most expensive film Netflix has ever made, or right up there with their biggest budget productions, alongside the Russo brothers’ movies. It sounds like they’re really going all-in on bringing Narnia back to the screen!
Bloomberg’s Lukas Shaw, co-hosting the show, explained that the deal faced difficulties partly because of Warner Brothers’ potential opposition. He believes the main problem was the issue of theatrical releases, as most of the entertainment industry was against the deal due to this.
As of today, Netflix hasn’t revealed how much Greta Gerwig’s new Narnia films—starting with The Magician’s Nephew, which finished filming in January 2026—are costing to make. Because Netflix is also releasing the movie in theaters, the first film, expected in 2027, could end up being more expensive to produce than the original Narnia films from Walden Media.
| Narnia Installment | Reported Budget |
|---|---|
| The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe | 2005 | $180 Million |
| The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian | 2008 | $225 Million |
| The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader | 2010 | $155 Million |
No matter how much money Netflix puts into The Magician’s Nephew, it has the potential to be very successful. The Chronicles of Narnia books have a large and dedicated fanbase, and many of those readers will likely go to see this new adaptation in theaters.
Fans of fantasy will likely enjoy The Magician’s Nephew, and with Netflix producing it, the series could introduce these stories to a whole new audience. The show has the potential to become very popular.
The new adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew benefits from a fantastic cast, including stars like Meryl Streep, Carey Mulligan, and Daniel Craig. If the Netflix reboot does well both in theaters and on the streaming platform, it could be a strong beginning for a new Narnia series.
As a huge Narnia fan, I’m really excited about the new movie! It’s awesome that they’re finally planning to adapt all the books – it feels like Narnia could really come to life on screen this time. The first one, The Magician’s Nephew, is coming to theaters on February 12th, and then it’ll be on Netflix starting April 2, 2027. I’m already counting down the days!
