The Emmy-winning actor will return as Fred Heckman in the upcoming live-action version of American Hostage, and new photos offer fans a first glimpse of him in the role.
MGM+ has shared a sneak peek at its upcoming psychological drama, American Hostage, with new photos of Jon Hamm on set. The series also stars Giovanni Ribisi, Mireille Enos, Kristoffer Polaha, and William Jackson Harper. American Hostage is based on a true story about a kidnapping and the demand that a specific radio reporter, Fred Heckman, be allowed to interview the kidnapper. While a specific date hasn’t been set, the show is anticipated to debut this fall.
MGM+’s 8-Part Thriller Plots Fall 2026 Debut
Premiering later this year, American Hostage is a thrilling true story based on the popular scripted podcast. Set in the 1970s, the show follows Fred Heckman, a well-liked Indianapolis radio reporter, who finds himself in a dangerous situation when a hostage-taker insists on being interviewed on his news program.
Besides the lead actors, Jonathan Tucker plays FBI Special Agent Cormac McNally and Kat Cunning appears as Ibby Hall in recurring roles on American Hostage. The series was created and is executive produced by Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers, with additional executive producers including Hamm, Connie Tavel, Marney Hochman, Sharon Hoffman, Shawn Christensen, and Gabriel Mason.
American Hostage Creator Teases Series as Hamm’s ‘Most Moral’ Role
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the creator of American Hostage, Shawn Ryan, explained how Jon Hamm’s character is different from roles he’s played before. Ryan described Fred as a dedicated journalist who believes in telling the truth and is a devoted family man, making him perhaps the most morally upright character Hamm has ever portrayed. The conflict in the series arises when Fred’s personal life becomes entangled with the unfolding crisis.
Jon Hamm previously voiced the podcast version of the thriller, and that experience was a big help to the show’s creators as they developed the series. According to co-creator Myers, having Hamm’s voice in mind during the writing process was a major benefit. They didn’t encounter any downsides, only the need to adapt and innovate as they brought the story to the screen.
I’m really excited about this new series! It’s not going to be a simple retelling of the story, and I’ve heard it’s going to explore Hamm’s character, Fred, on a much deeper level – in ways we won’t necessarily expect. Apparently, these three days really push Fred to his breaking point. The creator, Myers, said Fred is trying to do the right thing, but it comes at a huge personal cost. What’s even more interesting is that the series will delve into Fred’s past and his relationship with his father, showing how those painful experiences actually shape the challenges he’s facing now. I think it’s going to give us a much richer understanding of who he is.
American Hostage will premiere on MGM+ this fall.
