Luke Cage’s MCU Return After Daredevil Season 2 Finale Addressed By Born Again Showrunner & EP

Be warned, this article contains spoilers from Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 8. A familiar face from the team known as The Defenders is now back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Showrunner Dario Scardapane recently told ScreenRant how Mike Colter made a surprise return as Luke Cage in the eighth episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 2. He explained the cameo came together quickly, originally as an idea for a future season, but ultimately worked perfectly as a closing moment for the current season, especially with the reunion between Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. Scardapane believes fans will be thrilled with the appearance and the team is very excited about the reaction.

ScreenRant interviewed Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, about the difficulty of keeping a hero’s look secret before the episode released. He said, “Hopefully, since the episode hasn’t aired yet, the surprise will be kept until it does.”

The head of Marvel Television expressed their excitement about Mike Colter returning to the Marvel universe. They said working with him again was fantastic, emphasizing that he truly embodies the character of Luke Cage. Being in his presence feels like being with the hero himself, and they hope his recent appearance will lead to future collaborations, though they can’t confirm anything for sure.

Luke Cage’s appearance in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again is only the start for the hero of Harlem. Photos from the upcoming season 3 show Mike Colter will return in 2027, along with Jessica Jones (played by Krysten Ritter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones). It’s still uncertain if other characters from The Defenders will reappear, but Marvel Studios officially including these shows as part of the main MCU storyline makes it a real possibility.

Colter’s character hasn’t appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since a brief appearance at the end of Jessica Jones season 3 in 2019, which was almost a year after his series, Luke Cage, finished. Though Daredevil: Born Again is complete, Marvel isn’t abandoning its gritty, street-level stories. Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as Frank Castle in The Punisher: One Last Kill, a new special presentation coming out on May 12th.

As a huge MCU fan, I’m incredibly excited to hear that the Punisher is finally joining the cinematic universe this summer in Spider-Man: Brand New Day! Apparently, Frank Castle will actually share the screen with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, which is a crossover I never expected. The movie will take place after the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, so it sounds like things are really ramping up in Phase 6!

In the months ahead, as production continues, we’ll learn more about how the team-up from The Defenders will connect to season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again. This Charlie Cox-led series is also slated to be one of the final Marvel shows for Phase 6, leading up to the conclusion of The Multiverse Saga with Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. Currently, Marvel Studios hasn’t revealed what the future holds for Daredevil and the other Defenders after Phase 6.

You can now watch all episodes of Daredevil: Born Again’s second season on Disney+. The third season is expected to arrive in 2027.
