Stephen King-Approved Survival Series Lord of the Flies Becomes a Netflix Instant Hit

Beloved classic novels remain popular and are often reimagined for new audiences. In February 2024, Jack Thorne, the creator of Adolescence, adapted a well-known novel into a limited series.

William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, has been adapted for the screen several times before, including films in 1963 and 1990, and a Filipino version in 1975. But the recent BBC limited series, directed by Thorne, was the first of its kind. It quickly became popular, according to data from FlixPatrol.

The show first aired on BBC One on February 8th, and Netflix added it to its offerings on May 4th. It’s a natural fit for Thorne to collaborate with Netflix again, especially given the popularity of his previous work, Adolescence, and other projects.

When Lord of the Flies was first released in the U.S., it started in fourth place. It followed the WWE show Raw, the documentary Should I Marry a Murderer, and another new release in the box office rankings.

What Happens in Lord of the Flies?

This limited series is adapted from William Golding’s classic 1954 novel. Produced by the BBC and Stan, it follows a group of boys stranded on a tropical island. They try to maintain order and civility, with Ralph taking the lead and the intelligent Piggy offering support. But Ralph’s leadership is threatened by Jack, who attracts other boys and leads them down a path from optimism to disaster.

In October 2023, the BBC revealed they were making a new series of Lord of the Flies. Filming began in September 2024, with scenes shot in Malaysia and the UK. The cast includes Winston Sawyers as Ralph, a newcomer as Jack, David McKenna as Piggy, and Ike Talbut as Simon, alongside Rory Kinnear, Rochelle Neil, Tom Goodman-Hill, and Daniel Mays.

Thorne told Tudum that Lord of the Flies feels particularly important today. He explained that we’re currently discussing issues facing boys and are seeing a generation struggle with loneliness and isolation, often turning to harmful ideologies as a result.

Lord of the Flies Was a Hit With Critics & Stephen King

The show has received strong praise from critics, earning a 95% approval rating and a ‘Certified Fresh’ badge, largely due to its insightful look at growing up. However, audience reactions are mixed. While some viewers appreciated the musical score by Hans Zimmer, others found it distracting and overly dramatic, with one person calling it ‘jarring’ and ‘annoying.’ Others simply found the show dull and lacking in quality writing.

Stephen King recently shared his positive reaction to the series on X (formerly Twitter). He admitted he was initially skeptical, but found it to be “remarkable,” successfully capturing the horror and mystery of the story about lost children. When someone expressed concern about whether the series would live up to the book, King reassured them that they would enjoy it.

Lord of the Flies is streaming on Netflix.
