Be warned, this article contains spoilers for episode 6 of For All Mankind season 5, titled “No Sudden Moves.” Costa Ronin, a star of the Apple TV+ science fiction series, discusses how the show reflects actual events from U.S. history.
When it debuted in 2019, this series was one of the first shows on the streaming platform. Now in its fifth season, For All Mankind is Apple TV+’s longest-running science fiction series. A key to its success is its unique storytelling: each season jumps to a different decade in a world where the space race never ended. The first season takes place in the late 1960s and early 1970s, while the current fifth season is set in the 2010s.
In season 5 of For All Mankind, Ronin plays Leonid Polivanov, the governor of Mars. The sixth episode, “No Sudden Moves,” depicts a rebellion by the Martian colonists against those in charge. During the uprising, Lenya is taken hostage. Eventually, Miles Dale (played by Toby Kebbell) intervenes and successfully negotiates the release of all hostages, with the exception of the governor.
Liam Crowley from ScreenRant spoke with Ronin about Lenya’s part in the latest episode. They discussed where Lenya’s relationship with President Jim Bragg currently stands, whether she supports his decision to stop aid to Mars, and how these plot points connect to actual events in U.S. history.
Mars’ Relationship With Earth Follows The Trajectory Of Colonial History
ScreenRant asked about the recent announcement that aid to Mars will be completely stopped. Before discussing that, they wanted to know what Lenya’s current relationship is with the U.S. President.
In ‘Costa Ronin: Mars,’ the setting is a Martian colony. Unlike previous seasons where characters clearly sided with the US, USSR, or Korea, this season focuses on Mars itself as a growing power. Characters are now navigating relationships with Earth’s leaders – the US President, the USSR President (with Lenya aiming for that role herself, making Mars a stepping stone), and other world leaders. I play a character who is strategic and keeps his true intentions hidden, carefully building connections for both immediate and future gains. Because of this, he needs to maintain good relationships with everyone and avoid making enemies.
I was really intrigued by the question about President Bragg cutting off aid to Mars. I’m so curious to know what Lenya thinks about that decision – does she see it as a necessary, though harsh, step, or does she disagree? And honestly, I’m on the edge of my seat wondering how Bragg himself will react to any pushback. It feels like a really pivotal moment, and I’m eager to see how it all unfolds.
Historically, colonies often follow a predictable pattern. Initially, a ‘mother state’ establishes and populates a colony. As the colony grows, its inhabitants demand more rights and begin to assert their needs and boundaries. The mother state often responds with punitive measures – cutting off support, sending military forces, or implementing other controls to maintain power. This is precisely the situation unfolding on Mars. It began as a colony, and now that support is being withdrawn, the Martian colonists must determine if they have the resources, capabilities, and independence to thrive on their own. They need to figure out how to produce food, manufacture goods, and meet all their needs without relying on the eight nations they currently depend on.
I hadn’t considered that angle before – seeing it as a modern take on a mother country and its colony, where the colony eventually deserves independence and has its own unique needs. It reminded me of the relationship between America and Britain, something we all learn about in school. It’s really interesting to see parallels between that historical dynamic and what’s happening in the show. Thanks for pointing that out – it gave me a new way to think about it.
Considering that perspective, does the concept of people descended from Mars remind you of anything similar? It’s an interesting thought – who can say for sure?
For All Mankind releases new episodes on Fridays on Apple TV.
