Okay, so the season 3 finale of From delivered a shocking moment – Jim Matthews, a character we’ve known since the very beginning, is brutally killed by the Man in Yellow. But here’s the really strange part: we don’t find out about it until the second episode of season 4. It’s Jim’s kids, Julie and Ethan, who make the horrifying discovery – they stumble upon his body hanging in the town’s barn. It’s a truly disturbing scene, and the delayed reveal just adds to the unsettling atmosphere of the show.

In a conversation with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant, actress Camila Moreno discussed how upsetting it was for her character, Tabitha, to have her children find Jim’s body. She admitted enjoying the plot twist as a viewer, but felt it was incredibly cruel for the characters involved. Watching it as an audience member, I absolutely loved it – it was amazing! But looking at it from an actress’s perspective, I thought some of the choices were really harsh. It genuinely felt unkind.

The thought of finding someone I care about in a body bag is horrifying. Even if it was him, I couldn’t bear to see him like that, all broken and injured. It’s just awful to imagine. I would have gone to the barn with my kids anyway, even if I knew there was nothing I could do to help.

Looking back, I think what happened was bound to occur. I really feel for the children involved, but I also admire Tabitha’s courage for being the one to open the bag. Personally, I would have been too scared to do it myself.

As Moreno suggests, the characters in From first believe the bloody bag hanging from the motel sign contains Jim’s body. However, it’s actually a goat. Julie and Ethan are dismissed while the bag is opened, and they soon discover their father’s body in the barn – placed there by the Man in Yellow. This is all part of his cruel plan to torture the Matthews family and the town’s residents.

Moreno would have preferred avoiding the bag and taking his children to the barn, but Tabitha is now facing the horrifying prospect of discovering her husband’s body. Throughout her journey, Tabitha’s courage and relentless pursuit of the town’s secrets have been her defining traits, ultimately leading her to a crucial revelation about herself and Jade Herrera (David Alpay) by the end of season 3 – a revelation that explains why the Man in Yellow killed Jim.

The message found painted near Jim’s body – “Knowledge comes at a cost” – is a clear threat: the townspeople should stop seeking answers. Every time they uncover something new or succeed, something terrible happens, often resulting in someone’s death. Jim’s death was a direct consequence of Tabitha and Jade’s discoveries, highlighting how dangerous their pursuit of truth has become. The Man in Yellow’s response confirms they’re getting dangerously close to uncovering the town’s biggest secrets.

Despite his death, Jim isn’t truly gone. Ethan sees his father in the woods during episode 2 of season 4, and Jim instructs him to seek out the Lake of Tears. This makes Jim part of a group of characters – including Father Khatri, Abby Stevens, and Tom the bartender – who have reappeared even after dying. How these reappearances happen, and what they signify, remains a mystery as the show continues. Season 4 is confirmed to be the next-to-last season, with season 5 bringing the series to a close.
