For almost 50 years, Star Wars has presented its central conflict as a spiritual battle between the light and dark sides of the Force. The emotional core of the franchise has always revolved around Jedi self-control, Sith power-grabbing, and the contrast between altruism and selfishness. However, a recent fan survey has revealed a surprising twist on this traditional good versus evil dynamic.
Fandom recently released new Star Wars character rankings for May the 4th, as reported by Polygon. The rankings, based on how fans interact with characters on Wookieepedia, showed a surprising result: villains from the Dark Side are far more popular than heroes. In fact, they dominate the list, indicating a significant shift in fan preferences.
Fan Metrics Crown the Dark Side
Fandom’s list of the “top 10 Star Wars characters” wasn’t created by simply asking fans to vote. Instead, they tracked how much attention each character received on Wookieepedia over the past year. This approach means the list doesn’t necessarily show which characters are the most popular, but rather which ones fans are most intensely interested in and research.
The ranking is heavily skewed towards villains. Anakin Skywalker topped the list, with Darth Sidious, Maul, Darth Plagueis, Count Dooku, General Grievous, and Tenebrae following close behind. Even recently introduced, mysterious villains like Marrok and The Stranger ranked higher than established heroes. Ahsoka Tano was the only major hero to make the top five, providing a balance against the dark side characters.
It’s impossible to miss the shift in focus. Iconic characters like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia Organa, and Obi-Wan Kenobi have taken a backseat to newer, more enigmatic figures. While it seems strange on the surface, it perfectly illustrates how fan communities operate in today’s digital world.
Why Luke Lost to Darth Plagueis
The biggest surprise is Luke Skywalker’s poor performance, especially since he’s still considered the main hero of the Star Wars saga. Mark Hamill has been the face of the franchise for almost 50 years, and Luke remains closely linked to the series’ central ideas of hope, forgiveness, and doing what’s right. However, based on online activity, he didn’t do well at all.
The reason some characters resonate more than others isn’t about whether we like them, but how clearly we understand their actions. Everyone understands Luke Skywalker. Darth Plagueis, however, is a mystery. Most viewers don’t feel the need to look up Luke’s importance, but they will search for explanations about obscure villains, mysterious figures, or characters hinted at in cliffhangers.
The real reason this list looks the way it does is simple: today’s fans are more interested in uncovering new mysteries than celebrating old favorites. While Luke Skywalker remains a central figure in Star Wars, characters like Darth Plagueis generate more online searches because of their enigmatic nature. In terms of what people are actively looking up, intrigue consistently outperforms simple fondness.
The Internet Changed What “Popular” Means in Star Wars
This result is what makes the ranking feel like the most unusual outcome yet in the ongoing debate between the light and dark sides, similar to Star Wars. It doesn’t mean people like Sith characters more than Jedi. It simply shows that darker characters inspire more online activity. By 2026, the lines between popularity and engagement will likely be blurred, even though they really shouldn’t be.
Similar results show up in Fandom’s rankings of Star Wars movies and shows. Maul – Shadow Lord is ranked number one, followed by Andor at number two and The Mandalorian and Grogu at number three – even higher than Episode IV – A New Hope which is sixth. This doesn’t really show which projects are the most historically important; instead, it highlights what’s new, popular, and getting the most attention online.
This list doesn’t prove fans like the Dark Side more; it shows the internet does. Online, things like search engines and wikis—and what algorithms focus on—tend to highlight mysterious, complex stories about villains rather than simple tales of heroism. While the Light Side remains the moral center of Star Wars, the Dark Side simply attracts more attention online.
