With the first season of Maul – Shadow Lord now finished, fans are eager to know what Star Wars show is coming next and when it will be released. Created by Dave Filoni, who also directed Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Maul – Shadow Lord is a Disney+ series that premiered in April 2026. The show picks up after the events of The Clone Wars, following the villain Lord Maul as he tries to establish a criminal empire on the planet Janix.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve been loving how much the Disney+ shows are adding to the universe. While I’m definitely hyped for the Mandalorian movie, I’ve gotta say Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord season one really blew me away. It dives deep into Maul’s history, giving him so much more nuance than we ever saw in The Phantom Menace. It’s just another example that these Star Wars spinoffs on TV can be as compelling and exciting as the big theatrical releases.

Following the popularity of shows like Andor and Ahsoka, many wondered if animated Star Wars projects would take a step back. However, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord quickly proved that exploring lesser-known characters with a darker, more complex approach can be very successful. The show received overwhelmingly positive reviews – 98% from critics and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes – demonstrating strong viewer interest. Now that Dave Filoni’s series has resonated so well, fans are eager to know what’s next, and the answer is The Ninth Jedi.

The Ninth Jedi Is Star Wars’ First Spinoff Based On The Visions Series

Coming in late 2026, The Ninth Jedi will be the first series spun off from Star Wars: Visions. The original “The Ninth Jedi” was a standalone episode from Star Wars: Visions season 1, released in September 2021. Written by Kenji Kamiyama, it tells the story of Kara, a young woman who travels to the temple of Margrave Juro on the planet Hy Izlan to deliver lightsabers crafted by her father, Lah Zhima, to the last Jedi.

Despite initially believing they were encountering Jedi, Margrave Juro, Ethan, and Kara discover these figures are actually Sith impostors trying to stop them from rebuilding the Jedi Order. They manage to defeat most of the impostors and even redeem one, bringing him back to the light side. In the final moments of the episode, Ethan, Kara, and the redeemed Sith, Homen, pledge their allegiance to Juro’s order, preparing to rescue Lah Zhima from the Sith who imprisoned him for creating Jedi lightsabers. This story resonated with audiences so much that Star Wars: Visions season 3 revisited the plot in episode 3, “The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope.”

Every Other Star Wars Show Upcoming & In Development

Later in 2026, a new anime series will continue the story begun in the Ninth Jedi short films. It will delve deeper into Kara’s journey and reveal what happened to the Jedi after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Director Kamiyama is returning to lead the series, adding to the growing collection of animated Star Wars content. The success of season one of Maul – Shadow Lord demonstrates that there are many more Star Wars stories to tell beyond live-action films and shows. Before the anime arrives, fans can expect a second season of the live-action series Ahsoka.

Season 2 of Ahsoka, featuring Rosario Dawson, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, will continue the story from the end of season 1. Following that, a fourth season of The Mandalorian is planned, and creator Jon Favreau has stated to Empire Magazine that the The Mandalorian and Grogu movie isn’t meant to take the place of season 4.
