The first installment of the Harry Potter series is poised to shake up television, specifically HBO’s traditionally popular Sunday night programming. For years, viewers have turned to HBO on Sundays to watch the network’s top shows, ranging from epic fantasy series to award-winning dramas.
For years, HBO has consistently launched its most popular shows and released new episodes on Sundays. This tradition began with The Sopranos and has continued with hits like Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, The Last of Us, The White Lotus, and Euphoria. Sunday night viewing has become synonymous with high-quality HBO programming.
Given the popularity of the Harry Potter series, many expected the new HBO show to air on Sundays, as that’s when the network usually premieres its biggest hits. However, the first season, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will actually debut on Christmas Day – a Friday.
Although HBO is well-known for its strong Sunday programming, releasing Harry Potter on a Friday actually makes a lot of sense. Fridays mark the beginning of the week’s biggest period for TV and streaming viewership, and HBO is strategically launching a major, popular title to capture a large global audience on HBO Max.
As a movie fan, I’m really excited about Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone coming out during the holidays – perfect timing since the kids will be off! But I’ve been thinking, that kind of consistent timing won’t always work. Eventually, school starts up again. HBO’s smart to drop new episodes on Fridays, though. That way, kids can watch them and still have Saturday free – way better than making it a Sunday release when they’d all be stressing about school the next day.
Warner Bros. Discovery Has Big Plans For HBO’s Harry Potter
The news that Harry Potter is coming to TV has sparked mixed reactions. Some fans are excited about the potential to explore more of the story than the movies allowed, while others worry that a remake isn’t necessary. No matter what people think, one thing is certain: the Harry Potter series is poised to significantly impact the streaming landscape.
Warner Bros. Discovery recognizes the huge potential of the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series. J.B. Perrette, head of streaming and games at the company, believes it will be “the biggest streaming event in HBO Max history, and possibly ever for streaming in general” (according to Deadline).
Because the Harry Potter series is so popular worldwide, especially in Europe, HBO is launching its services in the UK and Ireland. Europe is a key region for the Harry Potter stories, given the character’s origins, and gaining access to this market is a significant achievement for both HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery.
