Recent updates about the Spider-Noir series reveal a surprising villain from Spider-Man’s classic enemies will appear. The upcoming live-action series on Prime Video will feature several of Spider-Man’s well-known foes, but they’ll be re-imagined to fit the gritty, film noir style of the world inhabited by Nicolas Cage’s Ben Reilly.
Sandman, Silvermane, and Tombstone are confirmed villains in the upcoming story. Initially, many fans thought Molten Man and Electro would also appear, but recent promotional materials have clarified that a new, fiery villain seen in the Spider-Noir trailer will be introduced, and the electric villain will actually be Megawatt.
A recent preview revealed that Andrew Caldwell will portray Dirk Leydon, also known as Megawatt, in the upcoming Spider-Noir series. It’s easy to see why some might be confused, as Megawatt’s ability to create and use electromagnetic energy is similar to the powers of the villain Electro. Megawatt first appeared in the 1990s.
With Electro being a well-known villain and Megawatt having similar powers, some fans might think it was a mistake not to bring back Maxwell Dillon in live-action. However, Megawatt’s planned appearance in Spider-Noir actually shows the series is handling Spider-Man’s villains in a smart and interesting way.
Obscure Spider-Man Villains Are Perfect For Spider-Noir
Megawatt, who only appeared once in the 1993 comic Spider-Man Unlimited #2, probably won’t make a huge splash when he arrives, but he’s still a valuable addition to the show. The series’ alternate universe setting allows for a lot of creative freedom with characters, and opens up possibilities that movies don’t have.
Marvel’s Spider-Man has a long history of memorable villains – characters like the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and the Lizard have become major antagonists throughout the Marvel Universe. Because so many iconic villains already exist, it’s difficult for lesser-known characters to take on significant roles.
Even villains like Tarantula and Boomerang, who have been Spider-Man enemies for years and have shown up in cartoons, aren’t exactly obscure characters. Still, it wasn’t until the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie that either of them finally appeared on the big screen. Considering that, it seems unlikely that lesser-known Spider-Man villains like Stegron, Kangaroo, and Will O’ The Wisp will ever get a chance to be in a movie.
A TV series is much better suited to featuring a wide range of villains. The format allows for multiple story arcs, giving Spider-Man the chance to battle a continuous stream of enemies. The show seems eager to explore lesser-known characters, as evidenced by the introduction of a villain who only appeared once in the comics.
Because most people aren’t familiar with the characters, the show can surprise audiences with villains like Megawatt and others they choose to highlight. This lack of pre-existing knowledge gives the show a storytelling edge.
Other Deep-Cut Spider-Man Villains Spider-Noir Could Introduce
With even minor Spider-Man enemies like Megawatt being considered, the show has plenty of villains to choose from. For individual episodes, Ben Reilly could face off against more down-to-earth threats like the Looter, Basilisk, Banjo, and characters like Abner, Chance, Grizzly, and Lightmaster.
Given the show’s gritty tone and focus on organized crime, several lesser-known Spider-Man characters could be great additions. White Dragon could be reimagined as a powerful Chinatown crime boss, creating conflict for Spider-Man or Silvermane. The Finisher, meanwhile, could function as a skilled assassin hired by Silvermane to eliminate Spider-Man or another key character.
