As summer begins, more movies are hitting theaters. May brings a sequel to a popular comedy-drama, another installment in a martial arts series, a new Star Wars film, and a couple of scary movies. 2026 has already been a fantastic year for film fans, with successful and well-received movies like 28 Years Later: Bone Temple and Project Hail Mary.
Some films have found larger audiences through streaming, while others, like Scream 7 and a new adaptation of Wuthering Heights, weren’t critically acclaimed despite doing well in theaters. April 2026 will see a diverse range of releases, including the animated sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the romantic comedy The Drama, a reimagining of Faces of Death, the horror film Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, and the biographical musical drama Michael.
Moviegoers can look forward to a diverse range of films in May 2026, with potential for some unexpected successes. Highlights include an animated movie based on a classic story, the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, a new Mortal Kombat installment, the first big-screen adventure featuring Grogu, and a fresh sci-fi horror film from A24, all releasing as the summer season begins.

The story follows Dr. Mary Kline (Renate Reinsve), a therapist who enters a strange, never-ending dimension with yellow walls to search for Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a patient who disappeared after going through a door in his basement.
I’m really fascinated by Backrooms – it takes this unsettling idea of liminal spaces, those weirdly familiar but empty places, and cranks up the horror and suspense to eleven. Plus, it’s got a great cast, including Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukit Maxwell, and Avan Jogia, which makes it even more compelling!
