ABC has finally confirmed what’s happening with Scrubs. The popular medical comedy, after largely dismissing its ninth season, made a surprisingly successful comeback 17 years later.
As a huge Scrubs fan, I was thrilled to hear the revival was getting such amazing reviews, even with some initial doubts about bringing it back. Thankfully, the numbers were good enough – ABC has officially confirmed a second season! It’s fantastic news, and I can’t wait to see what they do with it.
The show has been renewed for a second season, which will be considered Scrubs Season 2 and the 11th season overall. This wasn’t a surprise, as the show had a good chance of being picked up for more episodes. The renewal comes just two weeks after the first season concluded on April 15th. That season had nine episodes, and AMC hasn’t announced how many episodes will be in Season 2 yet.
What Happens in the Scrubs Revival?
Okay, so this show ran for nine seasons, but really, eight of them were the core group we all fell in love with. The final season felt a little different, bringing in new faces alongside some familiar ones. As a viewer, you’re right there with Dr. J.D. Dorian from day one of his internship at Sacred Heart. It’s a really charming look at his life – the good friends he makes, the relationships he navigates, and yeah, even the tough times and heartbreak. It really felt like we were growing up with him.
This comedy follows the lives of doctors at a hospital, filled with humorous moments, especially through the main character J.D.’s fantasies and his friendship with Dr. Turk. Despite being funny, the show was also highly regarded for its realistic portrayal of the challenges faced by medical professionals – the emotional stress, social dynamics, and demanding work environment.
Nearly twenty years after it originally aired, Scrubs successfully returned with a revival season. The story brings J.D. back to Sacred Heart Hospital, where his friends Dr. Turk, Elliott, and Carla are still working. We learn J.D. had been working as a personal doctor making house calls, and he ended up at the hospital because one of his patients needed care there. During his time back, J.D. reconnects with his mentor, Perry Cox, who decides to retire and offers J.D. the position of Chief of Medicine.
The new season features J.D. as Chief of Medicine, navigating the challenges of the job alongside his complex relationship with his son’s mother. He’s determined to provide excellent care to his patients and train his interns, all while dealing with administrative tasks and healthcare hurdles.
The Scrubs Revival Was a Major Hit
Hollywood is currently relying heavily on revisiting old ideas with spinoffs, sequels, reboots, and remakes, so the news of a Scrubs revival didn’t excite many longtime fans. However, Bill Lawrence (known for shows like Shrinking, Ted Lasso, and Rooster) consistently creates quality television, and his latest project is no exception.
The new Scrubs revival is receiving excellent reviews! Critics give it an 89% approval rating and a ‘Certified Fresh’ badge, while audiences love it even more with a 93% approval score. Reviewers highlight that the show successfully recaptures what made it great, delivering the same blend of funny medical situations, touching stories, and overall enjoyment that fans remember.
Scrubs is available to stream on Hulu and Disney+ internationally.
