39-Year-Old Superman Villain’s DCU Return & Comic Accuracy Teased By Sean Gunn

Sean Gunn, known for playing Maxwell Lord in both Superman and season 2 of Peacemaker, is hinting that his character will be back in the DC Universe.

I recently read an interview with the actor who plays Maxwell Lord, and it sounds like he knows a lot about what’s coming up in the DC Universe! He couldn’t give away any specific details, of course, but he hinted that Maxwell Lord will be involved in a lot of different storylines. He even said Lord’s influence will be felt throughout the entire DC Universe, and he could end up crossing paths with pretty much any character. It’s exciting to think about where they’ll take him!

Maxwell’s immense wealth raises questions about how he’ll wield his influence, and Gunn is eager to delve into this complex aspect of the character.

Gunn explained that Maxwell sees the world differently than most, likely due to his wealth and influence. However, the actor questions whether there’s still a selfless side to the character.

As a huge fan, I’m really intrigued by what James Gunn said about the character. He was wondering if, even with all this wealth, the character will actually try to do some good in the world, or if it’s all just about him gaining more power. That’s the core question he’s hoping to explore, and honestly, it’s a fantastic angle – it adds so much depth!

Maxwell Lord has been portrayed by various actors in different TV shows and movies, including appearances on Smallville and Supergirl. Pedro Pascal played him in the Wonder Woman 1984 film, which was part of the DC Extended Universe. More recently, James Gunn took on the role when his brother relaunched the DC Universe.

Gunn explains that his take on the character is inspired by the original comic books – Maxwell first appeared in Justice League #1 in 1987 – but he’s also keen to create something new and unique. He’s very enthusiastic about sharing this vision with fans soon.

It’s hard to say much without giving anything away, but I’m really looking forward to seeing how Maxwell Lord impacts the DC Universe. I believe he’s secretly involved in a lot of what happens. He’s not just rich – he’s incredibly wealthy, possibly one of the richest people ever. And that kind of wealth gives him a lot of influence. It’s going to be interesting to see how he chooses to use that power in the future.

I’m fascinated by the people around characters like Maxwell Lord and how they see the world. Someone with that much wealth has a unique perspective. I’m exploring whether there’s still a genuine desire to do good within them – could they use their wealth to improve things, or are they primarily motivated by personal power? We’re developing our own version of the character, inspired by the comics but also forging a new direction. I can’t wait to share what we’ve created with the audience.

Sean Gunn frequently collaborates with his brother, James Gunn, on his films. He’s known for playing Kraglin Obfonteri in several Marvel movies, including the Guardians of the Galaxy series, Avengers: Endgame, Thor: Love and Thunder, and What If…?. He also provided the performance capture for the character Rocket and appeared in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

After James Gunn moved from Marvel to DC Studios, his brother Sean Gunn joined him, taking on several roles in the DC Universe. He’s played Weasel in both The Suicide Squad and Creature Commandos, and also portrayed Maxwell Lord in Superman and one episode of Peacemaker season 2.

Because Gunn has worked with the director for a long time – and they’re brothers who’ve known each other forever – he feels incredibly comfortable collaborating with him, describing it like wearing your favorite, most comfortable old T-shirt.

I genuinely enjoy working with James above all else. Knowing I’ll be on one of his projects actually makes me feel relaxed and comfortable – it’s like grabbing your favorite, well-worn T-shirt.

Although James Gunn’s long-term plans for the DC Universe are still uncertain, he’s hinted that he will return to play Maxwell Lord again. He confirmed this recently in a social media post.

Although the next Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow, isn’t scheduled for release until July 2027, some fans are hoping to see the character return in some form before then. However, James Gunn and DC Studios haven’t confirmed any plans for an earlier appearance.
