When The X-Files first aired in the fall of 1993, it captivated viewers with a world of mysteries involving the paranormal and aliens, explored through the investigations of agents Mulder and Scully. The show largely focused on the clash between believing and skeptical perspectives. This approach helped viewers experience the strange and unusual events of the series in a way that felt relatable and somewhat realistic. Scully, in particular, relied heavily on facts and science, which served as a defense against anything that challenged her logical worldview.
Initially, Scully joins Mulder on The X-Files to disprove his unusual theories, using her medical background and logical thinking to challenge him. However, as they investigate increasingly strange cases, she begins to question her own beliefs. During the first season, one particular episode changes the show’s dynamic, pushing Scully to reconsider her reliance on logic and even consider the possibility of life after death. Her encounter with Luther Boggs forces her to admit that her skepticism isn’t enough to protect her from unsettling realities.
Scully Faces The Afterlife in This Episode of The X-Files
“Beyond the Sea” was the thirteenth episode of the first season of The X-Files, originally broadcast on January 7, 1994. The episode opens with Dana Scully having dinner with her parents. Although she and her father care for each other, they aren’t very close, and Scully often tries to earn his approval and recognition for her work.
When Scully’s parents were leaving, her mother gently urged her father to ask about Dana’s job, but the resulting conversation felt brief and uncomfortable. Scully then fell asleep on the couch and dreamt she saw her father sitting in front of her. Shortly after waking, she received a call from her mother with the devastating news that her father had died of a heart attack.
Scully is deeply shaken by the news of her father’s death, and also disturbed by the strange vision she had just before receiving the call. This experience forces her to re-examine her strictly scientific worldview and how she perceives reality. The episode then shifts to a typical X-Files opening scene: a young couple is abducted by someone pretending to be a police officer.
Viewers then see Mulder surprised to find Scully back at work at the FBI so soon after her father died. He tells her about the missing teenagers from the beginning of the episode and explains that he thinks they have very little time left before something bad happens to them.
Before heading to North Carolina to look into the missing teens, investigators are looking into the statements made by Luther Lee Boggs, a man played by Brad Dourif. Boggs is currently in custody at a facility close to where the teens disappeared and claims to have information about the case.
Boggs had been scheduled for execution, and Mulder’s report played a part in that decision. During the event, Boggs claimed to have seen visions, including the ghosts of the people he had killed. Scully was surprised by Mulder’s disbelief, as he typically readily accepts paranormal explanations. Mulder, however, suspected Boggs was simply trying to delay his execution.
Scully intends to go to her father’s funeral and then meet Mulder in North Carolina. Before leaving work, she reviews the files Mulder has collected on cases involving ghostly sightings. This is the first time in the history of The X-Files that Scully has initially believed something might be paranormal.
Still grieving her father’s recent death and haunted by a strange vision she had before hearing the news, she attends the funeral. While there, she asks her mother if her father had ever expressed pride in her career. Throughout the ceremony, “Beyond the Sea” – his favorite song – played in the background.
She began seeking answers that science couldn’t offer. Following the funeral, she traveled to North Carolina and met with Mulder.
The Dynamic Between Mulder and Scully Shifts Due to Luther Boggs’ Visions
Investigators are looking into Luther Boggs’s knowledge of the missing teenagers, suspecting he may be collaborating with someone else to lessen his potential life sentence.
Mulder set up a test for Boggs, presenting him with what appeared to be evidence from the crime scene—but it was actually a piece of fabric from Mulder’s own shirt. When Boggs held the cloth, he seemed to enter a trance and started hinting at where the missing teenagers might be. Mulder then revealed the cloth was from his shirt and quickly dismissed Boggs’s reaction before leaving.
While Scully stands near Boggs, he unexpectedly calls her by a familiar, personal name and starts singing “Beyond the Sea.” Mulder remains at the prison to continue questioning Boggs, and Scully returns to her hotel. On the way, she realizes that certain places she passes match the seemingly random words Boggs spoke while in a trance.
After entering the building close to the recognizable landmarks, she discovers undeniable proof that both the kidnapper and the teenagers had been present. Sharing this with Mulder changes their usual working relationship. Mulder starts to think Boggs has an accomplice, while Scully begins to take Mulder’s intuitive insights seriously.
Scully is still grieving her father’s death, and she’s unsettled by how much Boggs reminds her of him, leading her to wonder if there’s something supernatural happening – if her father is trying to connect with her. Meanwhile, Mulder tries a new tactic to catch Boggs and his accomplice, providing a fabricated news report about the missing teenagers, hoping to expose them.
Mulder and Scully were monitoring Boggs, hoping he’d call someone involved in the case. Instead, he unexpectedly called Mulder, demanding to know why Mulder didn’t believe him, since Scully did. Boggs insisted that, regardless of whether he was telling the truth, they were quickly running out of time and needed to cooperate with him.
Boggs tells Mulder and Scully where the kidnapper and the teenagers are, and provides a description of the criminal. He also warns Mulder he’ll be hurt, and this prediction comes true when Mulder is shot and hospitalized. With Mulder temporarily sidelined, Scully gets more individual time to question Boggs.
After a thorough investigation, she firmly believes Boggs is being honest. He offers to let her speak with her father in exchange for a lighter sentence, but the judge refuses. Boggs already knows the judge said no, but he agrees to one last conversation between her and her father as a gesture of gratitude for her efforts to help him.
As Boggs is led to his execution, Scully declines his offer. While she’s become more open-minded throughout the episode, she ultimately won’t fully abandon her scientific worldview.
Beyond the Sea Sets the Stage For the X-Files Future
After losing her father and having a strange experience with Luther Boggs, Scully begins to understand things from Mulder’s point of view. This episode lets her feel the annoyance of trying to prove the existence of the supernatural when no one believes her.
Throughout the series, Scully remains dedicated to science, but her experience with Boggs makes her more willing to consider explanations beyond the natural world. This episode impacts both Scully and Mulder; Mulder occasionally has to question even the most unbelievable things when solid proof is lacking. In “Beyond the Sea,” Scully is challenged to deal with her sadness and re-examine her tendency to doubt.
Even after more than three decades, this episode is still incredibly important to understanding the show and how it works. It moves beyond simply following Agent Mulder’s search for the truth, with Scully offering a grounded counterpoint. The episode’s focus on the visions of Luther Boggs paved the way for Scully’s personal and emotional development to become a key part of The X-Files going forward.
