Be warned, this article contains major spoilers for The Boys season 5, episode 5, “One-Shots”! After a long wait, The Boys season 5 reunited Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, and Jared Padalecki on screen, and the actors themselves were thrilled to share the moment with fans.
Jared Padalecki (Ackles) was among the first of the original Supernatural cast to work with creator Eric Kripke again, appearing as Soldier Boy in The Boys. After not being in season 4, Soldier Boy returned in season 5, revived by Homelander to pursue Butcher and his team. This chase eventually led them to Los Angeles, where they encountered former Seven members Mister Marathon (played by Padalecki) and Malchemical from Super-Duper (played by Collins).
I was reading ScreenRant the other day, and they had a great interview with Jensen Ackles about Season 5 of The Boys. He was talking about that Supernatural reunion in episode 5, and he described it so perfectly. He said it felt like catching up with old friends – you’re always hanging out, but then they go off and do something incredible, and you’re just excited to hear all about it when they get back!
Jensen Ackles described wanting to share his new project with friends, but it’s so different from his usual work that it feels hard to explain. He’s playing a new character on a different show, and it’s been a really fun and unique experience he wishes they could all witness.
When Kripke finally cast Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles in season 5 of The Boys, Ackles felt like he’d gotten “two tickets to the show,” and was eager to share the series’ wild and unpredictable nature with them. They all had a lot of fun playing exaggerated, fictionalized versions of themselves, and Ackles noted that both Padalecki and Collins were already fans of the Prime Video series before joining the cast. He was excited they could now experience the show from a completely new perspective and see how everything worked behind the scenes.
Regarding Seth Rogen’s portrayal of Soldier Boy and whether the three actors worked together on the scene, Jensen Ackles explained they didn’t try to alter the character or plot. However, they did contribute a few extra lines of dialogue and offered suggestions on how to best stage the central stunt during Soldier Boy’s fight with Marathon and Malchemical – something Ackles and Jared Padalecki have always been skilled at.
Ackles shared that the show’s executives were very excited about the Supernatural reunion as well. They were on set every day during the five days he, Padalecki, and Collins filmed their scenes together, eager to watch. Over the ten days of filming, the episode’s creative team offered lots of suggestions for jokes and dialogue, and Ackles hopes some of those ideas will make it into the final cut.
When those incredibly funny guys were around the table, they did so many different improvisations and takes. I really wish viewers could have seen all of them – every single one was good enough to use! I was lucky enough to watch it all happen firsthand, and I had to work hard to keep from laughing and messing up the scene.
The addition of Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles to the cast of The Boys was highly anticipated, especially after Ackles was cast as Soldier Boy. The Supernatural stars and showrunner Eric Kripke had often said they wanted to reunite before the series ended, and they were carefully planning the right roles and storyline to make it happen.
Viewers familiar with Supernatural likely noticed parallels to past seasons while watching episode 5 of The Boys season 5. The intense conflict between Homelander and Soldier Boy, which led to both characters killing their respective opponents – Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy killing Jim Beaver’s character, and Antony Starr’s Homelander accidentally killing Jared Padalecki’s – strongly resembled several storylines from Supernatural where Dean and Sam clashed, and even fought with Castiel, for various reasons.
Jared Padalecki’s mention of Prime Video and Sony representatives being present during the filming of the Supernatural reunion in The Boys season 5 highlights how eager they were to deliver a satisfying moment for Supernatural fans. He also commended the creative team for skillfully adapting the scene to best showcase the talents of the three actors involved.
Okay, so The Boys is wrapping up with this current season, but don’t worry, that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy! There’s a prequel series called Vought Rising coming out around 2027, and it’s going to show how Vought got started way back in the 1950s. It’ll also dive deeper into Soldier Boy’s early days as a Supe. Plus, they’re already planning a second season of Vought Rising, and considering how long Marathon and Malchemical have been around, I’m getting the feeling this Supernatural reunion for Ackles, Padalecki, and Collins is just the beginning! I’m really excited to see where they take it.
New episodes of The Boys season 5 air Wednesdays on Prime Video.
