Three hugely influential stories that helped define the cyberpunk sci-fi genre in the 80s and 90s are being adapted for television. Though cyberpunk didn’t start with any one particular work, these three are widely considered its most important building blocks. They’ve stood the test of time and still have dedicated fans today.
It’s no surprise that classic cyberpunk stories like Blade Runner, Neuromancer, and Ghost in the Shell are being revisited for television. While William Gibson’s Neuromancer is widely considered the most important work in the cyberpunk genre, it’s surprising it took so long to get a major film or TV adaptation. For years, it was thought to be impossible to adapt, but Apple TV is now working on a show based on the novel.
While Neuromancer began as a novel, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner originated as a film, based on Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? The original Blade Runner was followed by Blade Runner 2049, which also received high praise from critics. Now, building on the popularity of the films, Prime Video is creating a third installment, Blade Runner 2099, as a television series.
As a huge fan of cyberpunk, it’s amazing to think about how much Neuromancer shaped films like The Matrix. I read that the Wachowskis actually showed Ghost in the Shell to the studio when they were trying to get The Matrix greenlit – talk about a powerful visual pitch! It’s cool to see both these worlds continuing to expand, even though the future of The Matrix is a little hazy. I just learned Ghost in the Shell, like Neuromancer before it, is heading to TV in 2026, which is fantastic news for fans like me.
Cyberpunk remains a relatively rare sight in movies and TV shows. It’s a tricky genre to adapt well because its unique look and complex ideas are hard to capture accurately. Often, adaptations either simplify the gritty details or focus too much on the visuals. However, the new versions of Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, and Neuromancer seem to be heading in a positive direction.
New Blade Runner, Neuromancer, & Ghost In The Shell TV Shows Seem Incredibly Promising
It’s common to be wary of reboots or continuations of popular franchises, particularly those with a strong history like Neuromancer, Ghost in the Shell, and Blade Runner. But the new installments of all three actually seem worthwhile. The upcoming Ghost in the Shell anime, created by Science Saru, promises to be a faithful adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s original manga.
This new anime series will be different from previous adaptations, like the popular 1995 film and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, by focusing on the humor of the original manga. Unlike those versions, it won’t take itself so seriously, making it a fresh and unique take on Ghost in the Shell.
Apple TV’s upcoming series based on William Gibson’s Neuromancer is looking promising. The streaming service has a strong track record of turning science fiction novels into captivating shows, as seen with Foundation, Silo, and Dark Matter. Plus, William Gibson himself is involved in making the series, which suggests it will be a high-quality adaptation.
Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099 has a strong creative team behind it, with Ridley Scott as an executive producer, Silka Luisa as showrunner, and Jonathan Van Tulleken directing. The series, starring Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, is already generating a lot of excitement as one of the most promising sci-fi shows expected in 2026.
Both previous Blade Runner films are considered classics of the cyberpunk genre, so the new Prime Video series has a lot to live up to. However, moving the story from movies to a TV show could actually be its greatest strength. It allows the series to pay tribute to the films while also expanding and refreshing the cyberpunk world they created.
