Marvel Studios is gearing up for what’s expected to be its biggest movie yet, Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to release in December. This film represents the culmination of over 18 years of Marvel films, building on both the Infinity Saga and the more recent Multiverse Saga. The Multiverse Saga, which started in 2021, has introduced audiences to alternate universes beyond our own. We’ve already seen glimpses of these worlds, like the Illuminati-controlled Earth-828 in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Earth-10005 which will be featured in Deadpool and Wolverine, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow its scope.
The upcoming film Doomsday will showcase the multiverse like never before, featuring at least three alternate realities. We’ll see different versions of familiar heroes, including multiple Avengers teams from our main Earth (Earth-616), the Fantastic Four from another world (Earth-828), and the X-Men from a brand new universe – which might be the same one seen in Deadpool & Wolverine (Earth-10005). This sets the stage for a potentially massive casting reveal from Marvel.
At CinemaCon 2026, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige discussed Robert Downey Jr.’s role as Victor Von Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film with Entertainment Weekly. Feige explained that Downey Jr. is a key part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, largely due to his popular eleven-year portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man. He revealed that he and Downey had numerous conversations about a possible return to the MCU.
As 2023 began and Robert Downey Jr. gained momentum toward winning his first Oscar (for Best Supporting Actor in Oppenheimer), Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was impressed by the positive reaction to his performance. This sparked the idea that, with the multiverse, anything was possible. He immediately called Downey to explore the possibility of him portraying what Marvel considered its most iconic villain.
When Robert Downey Jr. was gaining momentum towards his Academy Award win for ‘Oppenheimer,’ everyone was calling him the best actor around. We thought it was the perfect moment to approach him. Because we’re building a universe with endless possibilities – a multiverse – we can really take creative risks. He’d already played the most famous hero, so we wondered, why not have him play the most famous villain?
Casting Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom has led to speculation about connections to his famous role as Tony Stark. However, Marvel has emphasized that these are distinct characters. A first look at Downey as Doom, shown at CinemaCon, revealed him performing action scenes with an Eastern European accent completely different from Stark’s. The preview also didn’t show Doom removing his mask, suggesting a different portrayal than previous versions.
Marvel hasn’t announced when the CinemaCon trailer will be available to everyone. Fans are eager to see how Robert Downey Jr. portrays Doctor Doom and will have to be patient until Marvel shares more. Excitement is definitely growing!
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to debut in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
