Be warned – spoilers ahead for the finale of the Scrubs revival, “My Celebration!” Like most sitcoms, Scrubs relied heavily on familiar tropes during its original run. While the revival episodes haven’t completely abandoned these tropes, they seem determined to avoid one in particular. The show acknowledges this trope, but in a way that feels surprisingly different from typical sitcoms. This is a welcome change, making the direction of certain storylines genuinely unpredictable.
I’m referring to those couples who keep audiences guessing about whether they’ll finally get together. These pairings have driven some of the most memorable storylines in sitcom history. Think of Ross and Rachel from Friends, Jake and Amy from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, or JD and Elliot from Scrubs. But the recent revival of Scrubs seems to be playing with this familiar formula, and it’s a refreshing and daring choice.
“My Celebration” Once More Reshuffles Its Romantic Pairings

The new season of Scrubs starts with J.D. and Elliot recently divorced, and the show isn’t rushing to reunite them – which feels realistic. While fans are hoping for a romantic reconciliation between the two, the show’s creator, Aseem Batra, seems more interested in exploring new relationships among the younger cast members.
Throughout the recent episodes, fans have been rooting for Asher (Jacob Dudman) and Amara (Layla Mohammadi) to become a couple. While they did share some romantic moments, the season finale showed they’ve decided to remain just friends. This led to Sam Tosh (Ava Bunn) confessing her feelings for Asher. As for Amara, she seems interested in pursuing Blake (David Gridley), and Dashana (Amanda Morrow) is looking for romance outside of Sacred Heart. Ultimately, it’s unclear who these characters will end up with, or if they’ll find lasting relationships at all.
‘Scrubs’ Is Surely Still Treating JD & Elliot as Its Will-They-Won’t-They Storyline

Throughout the original run of Scrubs, fans constantly wondered if JD and Elliot would eventually become a couple. So, it felt natural when the revival series brought them back after they’d divorced. Many viewers thought the writers were revisiting their classic will-they-won’t-they storyline, but with a new challenge: they’d already tried and failed. However, it now seems increasingly unlikely they’ll get back together. Elliot appears happy with Wes (Any Ridings), and JD is connecting with the new character, Charlie (Rachel Bilson), who seems like a good fit for him.
Throughout the original run of Scrubs, both Elliot and JD had relationships with other people before almost getting married at the end of Season 8. So, the fact that they’re both dating others now doesn’t mean a reunion is impossible – their story followed a similar pattern the first time. Honestly, I can’t picture the revival ending without them finding their way back to each other, even if it doesn’t seem probable at the moment. I’d prefer it not to feel contrived, but I think it’s the necessary direction if the writers can make it believable.
In a recent interview with Deadline, showrunner Bill Lawrence hinted at a future reunion for JD and Elliot, saying the writers are actively working towards it and want to explore the emotional impact. He also mentioned Rachel Bilson’s storyline will play a role in rekindling feelings between the two. Lawrence revealed a more complete scene explaining Asher and Amara’s relationship arc was cut from a previous episode, which led to some confusion in the finale. If Scrubs gets a second season, he promises complex and challenging love lives for all the characters.
