After his storyline in season 4 of The Boys, many thought Ryan would simply step into Homelander’s shoes. However, his intense fight in season 5 shows he’s heading down a very different road. From the beginning of The Boys, Ryan has been a fascinating character, largely because he’s been influenced by two of the show’s most flawed figures: Homelander and Butcher.
Though Butcher cared about Ryan, he had trouble being a father figure. His own difficult relationship with his dad and his strong dislike of superheroes made it hard for him to connect with the boy. Ryan wanted Butcher to be a positive role model, but Butcher unintentionally pushed him away. As a result, Ryan began to favor his biological father, Homelander, and seemed destined to follow in his footsteps.
Throughout season 4 of The Boys, Ryan began to exhibit troubling behavior, mirroring Homelander’s darkness when he disobeyed Vought and fatally injured Mallory. His storyline in season 5 initially suggested he was losing his innocence. However, a recent fight scene in season 5, episode 3, definitively demonstrates that Ryan won’t follow in Homelander’s footsteps.
Ryan Is Neither As Strong Nor As Morally Skewed As Homelander
Despite Butcher’s warning to wait until they had the virus that could kill Homelander, Ryan’s anger takes over, and he goes to confront his father anyway. He actually starts fighting Homelander, demanding answers, believing he has a chance of winning. At first, Homelander doesn’t fight back, dismissing Ryan and claiming he no longer needs him now that he’s found a way to live forever.
When Ryan wouldn’t back down, Homelander exploded with anger and demonstrated his incredible power. The resulting fight was violent, and Ryan even managed to hit Homelander with his own heat vision, a blast that appeared potentially fatal.
Despite Ryan showing his inherited powers, Homelander easily evades his attacks and quickly knocks him unconscious with a brutal punch. This scene makes it clear that Homelander is significantly more powerful. Throughout the fight, Homelander mostly just defends himself and remains largely unharmed.
Ryan fights with everything he has, but Homelander seems to be holding back, not using his full power against his son. This fight makes it clear that Ryan isn’t strong enough to win against Homelander on his own. He might stand a chance if he had the virus that can kill superpowered people, but Homelander is simply too powerful to defeat with strength alone.
In season 5, episode 3 of The Boys, Ryan’s storyline shows he’s lost his innocence but remains more moral than Homelander. His willingness to risk his life to save the world proves he’s far more selfless than his father. Unlike Homelander, who is obsessed with living forever, Ryan is prepared to sacrifice himself for the greater good.
Given that Ryan has maintained his sense of morality and isn’t nearly as powerful as Homelander, he’s a long way from being a suitable successor in The Boys.
Ryan Lost To Homelander, But His Redemption Has Finally Begun
I’ve always felt so conflicted for Ryan. He started out wanting to be a good person, but being around Homelander really changed him, and he ended up making terrible choices. It was heartbreaking to see him hurt people like Mallory. But honestly, seeing him finally turn against Homelander and do what’s right? That felt like a huge step towards him finding his way back, and it gave me so much hope for his future.
Ryan will inevitably understand that Homelander didn’t genuinely love him, especially after the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father. Homelander only wanted a son to continue his legacy and was motivated by his own fear of aging.
After getting over the shock of his fight with Homelander, Ryan is expected to team up with Butcher and the others to try and stop Homelander before he causes more harm.
Ryan’s Loss Against Homelander Reveals 1 Harsh Truth About The Boys’ Power Scales
In the third episode of The Boys season 5, it’s unsettling how quickly Homelander dominates Ryan. While Ryan briefly made Homelander bleed, it only happened because Homelander wasn’t fully fighting back. The significant power imbalance made it clear that Homelander could have easily defeated Ryan much faster if he’d chosen to.
Ryan is considered one of the most powerful people with superpowers in the world of The Boys, potentially even stronger than the best characters from Gen V. His defeat by Homelander demonstrates that most supes in that universe wouldn’t stand a chance against Antony Starr’s character in a fight.
In past seasons, Starlight’s increasing power seemed like a real challenge to Homelander. However, it appears season 5 of The Boys has reduced her abilities. We even see Black Noir fighting on equal footing with her now. Marie from Gen V was once thought of as a possible opponent for Homelander, but after seeing how quickly he defeated his own son, it’s hard to imagine she’d have much of a chance against him on her own.
As a big fan of The Boys, I’ve noticed Marie hasn’t shown up in season 5 yet, which is a little odd. I’m guessing she’s probably involved in Starlight’s larger strategy to finally take down Homelander. Honestly, I’d love to see her go head-to-head with Homelander before the season wraps up – that would be an epic showdown!
