Sex crimes are among the most serious offenses handled by the criminal justice system, and in New York City, Captain Olivia Benson is a constant force for good. NBC has confirmed that the show will return for an impressive 28th season with Benson continuing to lead the team. However, NBC and Peacock have decided to cancel Law & Order: Organized Crime after a year of uncertainty about its future.
When Law & Order: SVU became the main show in the Law & Order universe, it proved more successful than most spin-offs. Of the other series that followed, only Criminal Intent and Organized Crime lasted beyond their first season. However, Organized Crime has faced its own challenges, going through five different showrunners over its run. While some fans are disappointed by its cancellation, others are hoping it might open the door for a reunion of the original SVU cast.
Will Stabler Return to Law & Order: SVU?
After a decade away, Chris Meloni returned as Elliot Stabler in the ninth episode of SVU’s twenty-second season, reuniting with his former partner, Mariska Hargitay. Following his wife’s murder, as shown in “Return of the Prodigal Son,” Stabler joined the series Organized Crime, which focuses on the experienced detective’s return to the NYPD and his work with the Organized Crime Task Force.
Although fans loved the show, Organized Crime didn’t attract as many viewers as SVU or the other shows in the franchise. Now that it’s been canceled, it seems clear that Elliot Stabler, the character, will remain based in New York. He could appear as a main cast member, in a recurring role, or even just make occasional appearances, but it’s highly likely he’ll continue to be a part of the Law & Order universe for the foreseeable future.
Chris Meloni shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, thanking his fans for their support of his character, Elliot Stabler, over the years. He expressed gratitude that they continued to watch and enjoy the show, even after a successful run. While there are no official announcements yet, Stabler has already been featured in 12 episodes connecting the different Law & Order series since his return.
Will Benson and Stabler Maintain Their Chemistry?
Throughout its run, one of the strongest aspects of SVU was the dynamic between its two lead detectives. Elliot clearly relied on Olivia more than his own family, spending a disproportionate amount of time with her. At the same time, Olivia didn’t pursue any lasting romantic relationships.
Fans are eager to see Stabler return, in part to finally resolve the lingering question of whether he and his former partner will get together. Olivia Benson has faced significant hardship, including feeling deeply hurt by Stabler’s abrupt departure – he was the most important person in her life, and he left without even saying goodbye.
Even though Stabler and Benson never became a couple while working at SVU, things have changed since Elliot’s wife, Kathy, passed away. The romantic tension between them is now very noticeable. Between Stabler recording a voice message saying “I love you” but never sending it, and Benson telling Rollins she’d once imagined a future with him, fans who ship them as a couple – known as “Bensler” fans – are very excited about Stabler’s return to the show.
Even though Benson and Stabler nearly kissed in Season 24 of SVU and clearly have feelings for each other, Benson confessed she wasn’t prepared to take their relationship to the next level. Since then, both have hesitated to fully explore a romantic connection, worried about risking their friendship.
There’s concern that Stabler may struggle to adjust to being back at SVU and taking direction from Benson, especially considering his history of ignoring procedures and bending the rules. Benson might also have trouble controlling his impulsive behavior and preventing him from acting on his own. Their dynamic already caused issues when they were just partners – it’s hard to imagine what would happen if their relationship became more serious.
Okay, so Season 27 of SVU kicks off with a really emotional reunion after the loss of Captain Cragen. It feels like a turning point for the team, and honestly, the showrunners have promised us they’re not abandoning these characters – and I, for one, believe them! There’s a definite sense that things are shifting, but in a way that feels like a continuation, not an ending. I’m genuinely excited to see where they take it.
