Elliot Stabler finally comments on his Law & Order: Organized Crime future.
With the current TV season wrapping up, networks are planning their fall lineups. CBS has already announced its schedule, but others are still deciding which shows to renew or cancel. NBC has officially ordered another season (season 28) of Law & Order: SVU, following hints from Ice-T that it was happening. However, Law & Order: Organized Crime starring Chris Meloni will end after its fifth season.
In March 2020, it was announced that Christopher Meloni would return to the Law & Order universe after leaving SVU nearly ten years prior. But instead of simply rejoining the original show, his appearance served as the launchpad for a new series, Law & Order: Organized Crime. This new show gave his character a dedicated storyline and allowed for further development of his relationship with Olivia Benson. After four seasons on NBC and one on Peacock, the series has concluded.
Shortly after the cancellation of Law & Order: Organized Crime was announced, Christopher Meloni shared his reaction on Instagram. He seemed as surprised as the fans were, saying he’d just learned the news online. In a heartfelt message, he thanked everyone involved in the show and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play Detective Stabler for 17 years. You can watch his video message here:
As a big fan of Law & Order: Organized Crime, I was really disappointed to hear it’s been cancelled, and I know I’m not alone. It always seemed like the show was having trouble keeping the same creative people involved for very long. If it had gotten another season, they would have needed a completely new showrunner to lead things. Honestly, since it moved to Peacock, I figured it was safe enough to keep going – it wasn’t taking up valuable time on NBC’s main schedule. So, the cancellation feels like the network just doesn’t see a long-term future for the show, which is a real shame.
Now the big question is whether Stabler will return to Law & Order: SVU to continue his story. Although his new show didn’t perform as well as the original SVU, Stabler remains a popular character. Plus, the ongoing tension and potential romance between Stabler and Benson has been a major draw for the Law & Order franchise, and fans would be disappointed if that storyline doesn’t eventually come to a satisfying conclusion.
I’m so excited that Law & Order: SVU is coming back for season 28! Now NBC has some time to really think about how to bring Stabler back into the mix, which I’m really hoping they do. But we’ll all have to be patient and wait until the new season to see what they come up with. In the meantime, if you need your Law & Order fix, you can catch every episode of Law & Order: Organized Crime over on Peacock.
