Disney will be showcasing a preview of its thrilling new survival story at CinemaCon 2026, debuting the first look at the film during a presentation on Thursday.
Inspired by Daniel Kraus’s popular 2023 novel, Whalefall tells the story of a diver searching for his father’s body who gets trapped inside a giant sperm whale. With only an hour of oxygen remaining, he must desperately fight for survival and find a way to escape from within the creature.
The new trailer focuses on the character played by Austin Abrams, showing him scuba diving and exploring the ocean. Initially peaceful, the dive soon becomes unsettling as strange and distant sounds begin to reverberate around him, building suspense.
The video hints at various sea creatures, then reveals a colossal being swimming among them. A tentacled shape flashes quickly, leaving Abrams confused. Soon after, a deep clicking noise announces the approach of something enormous – a huge creature swims by, destroying everything in its wake.
I was on the edge of my seat! It started with these little sea creatures suddenly scattering, and then Abrams joined them, clueless about what the panic was all about. Then it appeared – this absolutely massive thing ripping through the water, just demolishing everything in its path. Abrams made a break for the surface, swimming like crazy, but it was gaining on him fast. And then, bam! It grabbed him, pulling him down into the black depths. He fought, kicking and struggling, but those tentacle-like arms quickly wrapped around him, and it was clear he was trapped.
The trailer’s biggest shock comes when the creature opens its mouth, and Abrams is seen desperately clinging to its teeth to avoid being eaten. He struggles and even kicks inside the creature’s mouth, but his leg gets stuck. Quickly, he’s pulled further in, sliding down its throat while screaming, and the scene abruptly cuts to black.
The film’s trailer hints at a tense, thrilling survival story. It seems to closely follow the book’s plot: a man finds himself trapped inside a giant sea creature with dwindling oxygen and no escape. J.J. Abrams leads a cast that also includes Emily Rudd, Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue, Jane Levy, and John Ortiz.
Whalefall is set to hit theaters October 16, 2026.
