Okay, so I really wanted to love Netflix’s Zero Day – the cast was incredible, seriously one of the best I’ve ever seen on TV. But honestly, it was a total letdown. It tried to be a political thriller, but it just didn’t work. You’d think with shows like House of Cards and The West Wing being so popular, nailing that genre would be easier, but it’s surprisingly hard to pull off on TV, isn’t it?
Although political events impact our everyday lives, it’s surprisingly difficult to create a compelling and dramatic story about the inner workings of politics. This could be why Netflix’s 2025 thriller, Zero Day, didn’t succeed, even with a hugely talented cast including Robert De Niro, Lizzy Caplan, Dan Stevens, Jesse Plemons, Connie Britton, and Matthew Modine.
Zero Day Was Nowhere Near As Good As Its Cast List Suggested
Despite having a well-known cast, the series Zero Day received poor reviews, explaining why it didn’t gain much attention. The show centers around Robert De Niro playing a former president who leads a commission investigating a large-scale cyberattack.
Despite the President, played by De Niro, showing signs of mental decline, he’s still given the power to suspend Americans’ rights in order to find those responsible for a terrible event. The resulting movie tries to be a suspenseful thriller, but it ends up feeling silly, muddled in its message, and stuck in the past.
Robert De Niro Is A Rare Bright Spot In Netflix’s Zero Day
Robert De Niro is a talented actor who can elevate even weak material, as his best roles demonstrate. While he brings a compelling sense of inner turmoil to his portrayal of a troubled former President, this complicated and confusing thriller doesn’t give him much to work with.
Zero Day attempts to cover too much ground in its short six episodes, trying to make a lot of social points at once. While the show boasts a large and impressive cast – including Bill Camp, Angela Bassett, Joan Allen, Clark Gregg, Gaby Hoffmann, and Mozhan Marno (known from House of Cards) – these many storylines ultimately don’t add up to a satisfying whole.
Zero Day’s Premise Had Promise, But The Execution Wasn’t There
The main weakness of Zero Day is its story. It’s strangely both easy to guess and incredibly confusing, filled with misleading clues. Once you realize the show favors a neutral, uninteresting perspective, every plot twist becomes predictable well in advance.
Although Zero Day aimed to be a contemporary take on classic political thrillers like Three Days of the Condor and The Parallax View, those earlier films were groundbreaking because they challenged the prevailing political ideas of their time. Zero Day, however, avoided taking any strong positions to avoid alienating audiences, resulting in a political thriller that lacked substance and felt ultimately meaningless.
