Netflix Co-Founder Exits Company After 29 Years

Reed Hastings is leaving Netflix after almost thirty years as a key figure in building the streaming service.

Ted Hastings, who has been stepping back from daily operations to concentrate on real estate and charitable work, won’t be running for re-election to the Netflix board. His current term ends at the company’s June meeting. He shared these thoughts after Netflix released its recent financial results, and reflected on how much of an impact Netflix has had on his life, particularly pointing to the platform’s global growth in 2016 as a key moment.

Check out his statement below:

Netflix had a huge impact on my life, and I’ll always remember January 2016, when we launched our service to almost everyone in the world. I’m most proud of fostering a culture at Netflix centered around making our members happy – a culture that others can continue to build on and improve. My goal was to create a company that people would love and that would thrive for many years. I’m especially grateful to Greg and Ted, whose dedication to Netflix’s success allows me to move on to new challenges.

Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, expressed his gratitude for Reed Hastings, acknowledging Hastings’ significant impact on both of their careers. He shared that he’s known Hastings since 1999, when Netflix first started delivering DVDs by mail, and described him as a consistent source of motivation both personally and professionally. Sarandos also said he was thankful for the chance to work alongside someone who revolutionized the entertainment industry and is excited to see what Hastings does in the future.

He shared that Hastings’ strong work ethic, modesty, and ability to collaborate with others had a significant impact on him. Sarandos pledged to uphold Hastings’ approach to leadership, ensuring that he and the rest of the Netflix leadership team would continue to guide the company moving forward.

I’ve been incredibly inspired by Reed ever since I met him back in 1999. It’s been a real privilege to work with and learn from someone who’s truly made history, and I can’t wait to see what he accomplishes next. He and Greg have shown me what selfless, disciplined leadership looks like, and that’s something I’ll carry with me as we continue to lead Netflix through all the exciting changes ahead.

After Hastings left Netflix, the company surprisingly stopped trying to compete with Warner Bros. Discovery. This allowed Paramount to make a deal with the studio.

Reed Hastings started Netflix in 1997, and it has since revolutionized how people watch movies and TV shows. The company initially delivered DVDs by mail, but it later became a leader in the world of streaming.
