The fifth season of Stranger Things has wrapped up the main story, delivering an emotional finale for both the characters and viewers. While the original series is finished, the world isn’t quite done with Hawkins. Several spin-offs are planned to continue the story, and the first one, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, will arrive this month. This new show takes place between seasons 2 and 3 of the original series.
Given all the potential storylines and unexplored areas, it’s natural to wonder if Tales from ’85 will only last one season, or if it could become a continuing series. MovieWeb recently spoke with the show’s creator, Eric Robles, to find out if more seasons are planned, and he shared:
You know, I’ve been thinking about this a lot. If we could just talk, really talk, without any restrictions or pretending, I honestly have a strong feeling about how that conversation would unfold. I can almost predict it, and it’s something I feel compelled to share.
Due to confidentiality agreements and the presence of security, I can’t reveal the future plans for this project. While I don’t have control over the decision, ultimately it comes down to what the fans want. Personally, I have a clear vision for where this should go, and I know exactly what I’d like to see happen.
He explained that he has enough experience now to know how to develop the story and connect it to the events of Season 3.
As a huge fan of the show, it’s fascinating to hear the Duffer Brothers always had a clear ending in mind – they really built everything towards that final episode. But the Tales from ’85 series felt different. Apparently, it was a bit of a test run, and according to Robles, those stories aren’t essential to the overall plot. They’re keeping things flexible, letting what the audience wants guide where the show goes next. It’s a smart way to approach things, really.
I joined the project while they were finishing up Season 4. Whether fans will be interested in what comes next is a big question, but revisiting the story with an animated series wasn’t originally planned. It all evolved naturally. That’s how art – especially storytelling – often works; it grows organically.
Despite some intense moments that felt quite mature, Tales from ’85 remains suitable for younger viewers thanks to its animation style and overall tone. This is further emphasized by the fact that the characters are young themselves. This unique tone and storyline allow Tales from ’85 to attract its own fanbase, separate from the main series.

Robles explained that after Season 4 was filmed, the producers approached him with a specific challenge. They wanted the animated portion of the story to fit between Seasons 2 and 3, essentially pausing the narrative in winter. His task was to build a self-contained story with its own logic and rules, but it couldn’t contradict the events of the live-action series. This allowed fans to continue enjoying the story if they wanted, without disrupting the main timeline.
Although Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 is the first television series spun off from the original Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers are reportedly developing another live-action spin-off, but they haven’t revealed many details about it.
