Matthew Gray Gubler is making his way back to CBS for Einstein.
Matthew Gray Gubler is a familiar face on television, most famously known for playing Dr. Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds. He played that role throughout the show’s entire 15 seasons, remaining a constant presence on the CBS series even as other actors came and went. That’s why fans are so excited to see him back on the network for the new series, Einstein, which has been in development for a while.
CBS has unveiled its plans for the 2026-2027 TV season, giving viewers a first glimpse of the new series starring Matthew Gubler and Melissa Fumero. The show is set to premiere in 2027.
Einstein, a new series based on a German show of the same name, premiered in October 2024. The show follows Lew Einstein, a brilliant but directionless professor who happens to be the great-grandson of Albert Einstein. Played by Gubler, Lew leads a comfortable life and teams up with Detective Inspector Teri of the New Jersey State Police.
Teri is a focused and strict character who isn’t happy about being partnered with Lew. Actress Stephanie Beatriz, known from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, took on the role after Rosa Salazar (Alita: Battle Angel) left the project in May 2025. As a result, the character of Einstein was rewritten, and Beatriz was cast in this new version.
Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, the Academy Award nominee from King Richard, is also a key part of the cast. She plays Captain Frost, an experienced police officer with ten thousand hours on the job, who is eager to retire and enjoy life with her partner.
The new show Einstein has been a long time in the making, with ideas dating back to 2019. While many different concepts were explored, this version finally seems poised to become a centerpiece of CBS’s prime-time schedule, supported by a strong production team.
The new show Einstein comes from the creators of Monk (Andy Breckman) and director Randy Zisk. It aims to follow the popularity of shows like ABC’s High Potential and CBS’s Elsbeth. However, for fans eager to see Matthew Gubler return to television, this show is particularly exciting.
Shortly after Criminal Minds concluded, Matthew Gray Gubler became a successful children’s author, publishing two books including The Little Kid with the Big Green Hand. He’s also been in films like Horse Girl and King Knight. However, it’s been a while since he’s led a TV series, and Einstein aims to showcase a gentler side of crime-solving, similar to the way Criminal Minds finished its run.
