Okay, so as someone who’s completely obsessed with Antony Starr’s portrayal of Homelander, I’m hearing things that aren’t exactly encouraging about how Season 5 of The Boys is going to wrap up. Apparently, the finale might not be what fans of the character are hoping for – brace yourselves, it could be a bit of a letdown!
The first three episodes of the fifth and final season of the Prime Video series The Boys are now streaming. Based on the comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson and developed for television by Eric Kripke, the show concludes its run with these new episodes.
Why might Homelander fans be disappointed with The Boys Season 5 finale?
Just to be clear, I haven’t seen any advance copies of The Boys Season 5, and I’ve been really careful to avoid spoilers. I’m going in completely blind! I’m writing this purely as a huge fan of the show – and someone who loves the original comics it’s based on.
Considering how the comic series concluded, the ending of ‘The Boys’ is a bit divisive and could similarly spark debate if it’s used in the television show.
As a huge fan of The Boys, I’ve always found Homelander, played brilliantly by Antony Starr, to be the central villain. It’s fascinating to learn that his storyline differs quite a bit from the original comics! While the show has really leaned into his terrifying presence from the beginning, in the comics he doesn’t even appear in the final arc. Apparently, the comic’s big climax involves Homelander seizing the White House and eventually being defeated before the story wraps up. The final issues actually focus on Butcher becoming so consumed by his own rage that he’s the problem, forcing Hughie to step up and deal with him. I don’t want to give away too much, but just know that the comic’s ending, penned by Ennis and Robertson, doesn’t feature Homelander at all!
Okay, so after seeing what’s been happening in Season 5 of The Boys, I’m getting a strong feeling this might be the end of the road for the show. The conflict between Hughie and Butcher is really building, and honestly, it feels like things are heading towards a major showdown. Even the showrunner, Eric Kripke, admitted to The Hollywood Reporter he’s worried about how fans will react to the finale, which makes me think they’re planning a pretty definitive ending.
Some fans might be disappointed that ‘The Boys’ won’t end with a direct confrontation with Homelander, but creator Eric Kripke is confident in the show’s finale, despite his own worries. Responding to a fan who predicted an unsatisfying ending on Twitter, Kripke explained that a good showrunner constantly obsesses over details to ensure quality. He believes confidence without that level of scrutiny often indicates a weaker writer, and then jokingly said he was returning to work like Homer disappearing into a hedge.
New episodes of The Boys premiere on Wednesday until the finale arrives on May 20, 2026.
