The animated series Maul: Shadow Lord is a great follow-up to Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Taking place about a year after the events of both Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith – and the devastating Order 66 – the show shifts focus away from Darth Vader and the Empire. Instead, it explores the dark side of the planet Janix (think Gotham City in the Star Wars universe) as Maul attempts to rebuild his criminal organization and get revenge on Emperor Palpatine.
“Maul: Shadow Lord” seamlessly follows “Revenge of the Sith,” maintaining the dark and ominous atmosphere introduced at the end of the prequel trilogy. It builds on the sense of dread left lingering over the galaxy after the fall of the Republic.

As the Empire strengthens its control over the galaxy, Maul fights to remain relevant, and the show delves into the early days of the Empire – a period established by the events at the end of Revenge of the Sith.
As seen in the novel Maul: Shadow of the Sith, the Empire in its early days wasn’t the all-powerful force we see later in the original Star Wars films. It was still growing, and some planets, like Janix, were managing their own problems without any Imperial help. Captain Brander Lawson, a local authority figure, wants to keep things that way – he and his team understand that any Imperial presence would mean losing their independence.

Even law enforcement is starting to feel a growing sense of fear, similar to what the Jedi experienced during the final scenes of Revenge of the Sith. This feeling continues in Maul: Shadow Lord, which surprisingly focuses the conflict around the character of Maul.
Darth Maul represents the continued threat of darkness after the events of Revenge of the Sith. As the Empire openly takes control under Darth Sidious, Maul secretly works to rebuild his criminal organization and gain power. This echoes the tactics his former master used throughout the prequel trilogy, but on a smaller, more realistic level.
Just as Sidious masterfully manipulated galactic politics and used betrayal to gain power, Maul now tries to build his own criminal empire in the underworld, taking advantage of the chaos following the events of Revenge of the Sith.

The trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord hints that Darth Vader will appear in the 2026 Clone Wars sequel. This could involve Vader testing Maul’s strength as Maul secretly works against the Empire.
Given the stories surrounding it, and knowing that Revenge of the Sith focuses on Anakin Skywalker’s transformation into Darth Vader, it makes sense to think of Maul: Shadow Lord as a continuation of that film’s story.

The eighth episode of Maul: Shadow Lord, called “The Creeping Fear,” further emphasizes the show’s mystical and atmospheric themes.
The title isn’t accidental – it was actually a rumored working title for Revenge of the Sith back in 2004. Lucasfilm playfully fueled the rumors with an April Fool’s Day joke, briefly posting it as the official title on their website and sparking a frenzy of fan speculation.
Actually, the title Shadow Lord fits incredibly well. It brings to mind the same feeling of unease and oppression that defined the early days of the Empire.
Maul: Shadow Lord’s Revenge of the Sith Connection Is Much Deeper Than You Think

The galaxy was left in a dark place at the end of Revenge of the Sith, and Maul: Shadow Lord continues that grim trend. The story focuses on Maul’s relentless pursuit of revenge, ensuring the darkness doesn’t lift.
Maul’s quest to find an apprentice is reminiscent of how Palpatine manipulated Anakin Skywalker, but it feels more personal and emotionally intense. Instead of nurturing a troubled ‘Chosen One’ like Palpatine, Maul actively takes a disheartened young Jedi Padawan, Devon Izara, out of hiding and thrusts her into his chaotic and perilous life.
Maul and Devon’s growing alliance mirrors the dark and complex relationship between Sidious and Anakin, but feels more raw and intensely personal.
Ultimately, Maul: Shadow Lord isn’t just connected to Revenge of the Sith; it directly builds upon that film, continuing its story and exploring similar themes. It delves further into the dangers of seeking power through darkness, the destructive nature of revenge, and the growing sense of dread felt throughout the galaxy under the Empire’s control.
