Emma Stone’s Bold 84% RT Sci-Fi Thriller Finally Lands on Netflix in 2 Weeks

The critically acclaimed sci-fi comedy starring Emma Stone and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos is coming to Netflix later this month.

Starting April 26th, Netflix subscribers will be able to stream Bugonia, a remake of the 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet!. The movie follows two young men who believe the CEO of a powerful company is hiding a dark secret, so they kidnap her. Keeping her locked in their basement and questioning her soon leads to dangerous consequences for everyone.

Bugonia Marks Flawless Performances from Stone & Jesse Plemons

The film Bugonia immediately resonated with viewers thanks to its unique storyline, which added to the positive reviews it received. Starring alongside Stone is Jesse Plemons as Teddy Gatz, a man fixated on conspiracy theories who kidnaps her with the help of his cousin, who is on the autism spectrum (played by Aidan Delbis). Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone also appear in supporting roles.

Michelle Fuller, the CEO character played by Emma Stone, impressed director Paul Dano with her commitment, and that dedication was recognized. Both Stone and Jesse Plemons received widespread praise for their work in Bugonia. Stone earned a Best Actress nomination at the Academy Awards, and the film was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score. Both actors also received nominations at the Golden Globes for their performances.

Both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes overwhelmingly agree that the movie is a hit. It’s “Certified Fresh” with an 87% rating from over 330 critics and an 84% score from more than 1,000 viewers. Critics describe it as simply “bonkers entertainment.”

Bugonia Continues Stone’s Hit Collaborations with Yorgos Lanthimos

Since 2018, Emma Stone has worked with director Yorgos Lanthimos on a series of increasingly memorable films. Their partnership started with The Favourite, a movie that explores the competitive relationship between Sarah Churchill, the Duchess of Marlborough (Rachel Weisz), and Abigail Hill, the Baroness Masham (Emma Stone), as they both vie for the attention of Queen Anne of Great Britain (Olivia Colman).

In 2023, Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos teamed up for the darkly comedic film Poor Things, where Stone played Bella Baxter, a performance that won her an Academy Award. They collaborated again in 2024 on another project, this time also featuring previous Lanthimos collaborators like Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, and Joe Alwyn.

Bugonia arrives on Netflix on April 26.
