Daredevil: Born Again Reveals Vanessa’s Shocking Fate, Actor Explains Why

All empires have weaknesses, and in Season 2, Episode 5 of Daredevil: Born Again, titled “The Grand Design,” the thing that was holding Wilson Fisk’s inner demons in check finally breaks. Actress Ayelet Zurer shared that the show’s creators felt it was important enough to personally inform her about this pivotal decision.

Ayelet Zurer was surprised by the decision, as she told Variety at the show’s premiere. She explained that each member of the team personally called her to explain the reasoning behind it, and many were visibly upset. However, she ultimately understood it was crucial for the storyline, specifically to dramatically escalate the character of Kingpin, played by Vincent.

In this episode, Vanessa recovers from surgery and shares a tender moment with Fisk, asking for pineapple juice and requesting he remind her of how they first met. Sadly, her health quickly worsens, medical equipment malfunctions, and doctors are unable to save her as her heart stops.

Watching Vanessa say goodbye to Fisk was incredibly moving for me. The actress, Zurer, has talked about how difficult it was for her to wrap up a character she’d played for ten years – she said it felt like saying goodbye to everything they’d built together. It was genuinely emotional! The episode was so effective because it beautifully wove together Vanessa’s last moments with flashbacks to when they first met, all the way back at that art gallery. It really highlighted the depth of their connection.

In the show Born Again, Vanessa consistently acted as the calming influence on Fisk, trying to control his violent tendencies. Even Governor Marge McCaffrey (Lili Taylor) asked Vanessa if she could keep her husband in check. However, actress Rosario Zurer, who plays Vanessa, explained that Fisk’s desire for power was insatiable. She stated, “Vanessa can’t ever truly fulfill him, and nothing ever will.”

With Vanessa’s death, Born Again has now seen two of its original main characters killed off. This follows the earlier death of Foggy Nelson, who was killed by Bullseye in the first season.
