After a preview at CinemaCon, the first trailer for Godzilla Minus One is now available online. The Godzilla series has become popular again over the last ten years, both in North America and Japan. After a lull following Godzilla Final Wars, Legendary and Toho teamed up to reboot the series in North America in 2014, creating what we now know as the Monsterverse. Then, Toho revived their own Godzilla franchise with 2016’s Shin Godzilla, and now, in 2023, they’re releasing another new take with Godzilla Minus One.
Though Shin Godzilla was applauded for its sharp social critiques and unique, often unsettling, monster design and evolution, it was Minus One that truly brought Godzilla back into the public eye. Set after World War II, the film masterfully blended a somber mood with genuine hope and emotion, earning widespread critical acclaim and an Academy Award for its stunning visual effects. This success paved the way for a sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero, with Takashi Yamazaki returning to direct. The first official trailer is now available for fans to watch online.
This new Godzilla film is breaking new ground – it’s the first Japanese Godzilla movie filmed with IMAX cameras by director Takashi Yamazaki. The trailer hints at a more thrilling and action-packed story, with a shift in location and a two-year time jump. We’ll see the action move from Japan to the United States, specifically New York City, as Godzilla heads towards the Statue of Liberty. Returning to reprise their roles from Minus One are stars Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe. The film continues the story of their characters, hinting that Hamabe’s character may have been affected by Godzilla’s atomic blast in the previous movie, as suggested by a mysterious close-up at the end of Minus One.
As a huge Godzilla fan, the next few years are looking incredible! We’ve already gotten the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV this February, which was awesome. And get this – next March, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is coming out! It’s another Monsterverse movie from Legendary, and I’m betting it’ll introduce a brand new, huge monster for Godzilla and Kong to battle. But the biggest news? We’re getting a new Godzilla movie on November 6, 2026! I can’t wait!
Okay, so I just saw the teaser for Godzilla Minus One, and it looks incredible! From what I’ve heard and seen at CinemaCon, it’s definitely getting a big push in IMAX here in the States. Honestly, I wouldn’t be shocked if it ends up on a ton of IMAX screens when it comes out in November – the buzz is already huge, and they really highlighted the premium format. We don’t know much about the story yet, but seeing Godzilla destroy a brand new city is already getting me hyped!
