New ‘Longlegs’ Follow-Up Happening With Nicolas Cage and Original Director

I have to say, NEON just gets how to build excitement for a movie. They’re brilliant at reaching real film lovers, and honestly, they can generate buzz for just about anything. They really found a niche with horror, offering something different and more daring than what you usually see in theaters – think films like Possessor, Titane, and Crimes of the Future. But I think they absolutely outdid themselves with their marketing in 2024, leading up to the release of a truly provocative new horror film. It was a masterclass in building anticipation!

Osgood Perkins previously gained attention with films like The Blackcoat’s Daughter and Gretel & Hansel, but his collaboration with Nicolas Cage significantly boosted his profile. He also worked with Maika Monroe, known for her roles in It Follows, The Guest, and Watcher, to create a truly unique cinematic experience in the 2020s. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Perkins and Cage are teaming up again for another Longlegs film. While the ending of the first film seemed conclusive, and Cage’s character was a serial killer, the new movie will expand upon that same world – though it won’t be a direct sequel.

With Nicolas Cage confirmed to return and a new story on the way, many fans assumed the film might be a prequel, showing us the crimes committed by the villain, Longlegs, before the events of the 2024 movie. However, the report only states Cage will be in the new film, not necessarily reprising his previous role. This means he could be playing a completely different character this time around.

It’s already surprising that a new Longlegs movie is happening, but now we’ve learned NEON, the company originally set to produce it, is no longer involved. The project is moving forward at Paramount Pictures because it’s become larger in scope than NEON usually handles.

The first film centered on FBI agent Lee Harker (Monroe), who had an uncanny knack for catching criminals. This talent proved useful when she investigated a bizarre case involving the terrifying “Longlegs,” played by Cage. Director Perkins blended the style of crime thrillers like The Silence of the Lambs and Se7en with classic horror elements such as cults, unsettling dolls, and psychic powers.

The first movie used flashbacks to show Longlegs committing murders over many years, so it’s likely a new film will revisit another time period. However, since NEON reportedly backed out because the project was too ambitious, it’s hard to say what filmmakers Perkins and Cage are planning now.
