Okay, so I’m hearing about this new Blade Runner 2099 series coming to Prime Video, and honestly, the fact that they’re even making it is a bit surprising to me. I mean, they cancelled The Peripheral – which was a really cool cyberpunk show – after just one season. So, when I heard about another show in the Blade Runner universe, I was a little shocked, because it felt like they weren’t that into cyberpunk stuff to begin with. It makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
Fans have been waiting a long time for an adaptation of William Gibson’s classic cyberpunk novel, Neuromancer, and it’s finally coming to Apple TV. But surprisingly, Amazon’s Blade Runner: 2099 is shaping up to be an even more ambitious cyberpunk series, and that’s not the biggest surprise surrounding the show.
Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099’s Franchise Continuation Is Surprising
Ridley Scott’s film Blade Runner, based on Philip K. Dick’s science fiction novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, didn’t do well when it first came out in 1982. While it’s now a beloved cult classic, the movie was initially ignored by most moviegoers and received negative reviews from critics.
Despite positive reviews, Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049, didn’t perform well at the box office, earning only $276 million with a production budget exceeding $150 million. Therefore, it’s somewhat unexpected that Prime Video is creating Blade Runner: 2099, a new series that continues the established storyline.
The Blade Runner Franchise Has Struggled More Than Fans Might Assume
It was unexpected that Blade Runner 2049 got made, considering the original film wasn’t a box office success. Now, a new TV show, titled with ‘2099,’ is continuing the story, making Blade Runner a franchise with three official installments.
It’s remarkable that a sequel to Blade Runner was made, considering the original film didn’t perform well at the box office. It’s easy to overestimate the series’ success, though, especially given that director Denis Villeneuve’s other sci-fi films – Arrival, Dune, and Dune: Part Two – were all huge hits with audiences.
Ridley Scott became a box office powerhouse with films like Gladiator II and American Gangster, even with some expensive failures such as Napoleon and The Last Duel. So, it’s understandable why audiences might see Blade Runner: 2099 as a safe continuation of a popular series, rather than a big gamble for Prime Video.
