Superhero shows have been a consistent part of television for years, but only a few truly rise above the rest. They’ve always appealed to younger audiences, but gaining the attention of older viewers has been a slower process. Often, it’s nostalgia – remembering the cartoons they enjoyed as children – that keeps those older viewers coming back.
Despite a lot of uneven superhero shows, some truly stand out as complete and nearly flawless stories. These shows, both older classics and newer hits, set a very high standard for everything that comes after. They’re memorable for their deep, thoughtful narratives, exploration of difficult questions, and ability to create a strong emotional connection with viewers, making their fantastical worlds feel surprisingly real.
Batman: The Animated Series
Any list of the greatest superhero TV shows ever made has to include Batman: The Animated Series, and it deserves to be at the very top. This show brought Gotham’s Dark Knight to a whole generation of viewers, and introduced many of his most compelling villains – some of whom haven’t even appeared in live-action movies or shows yet.
Batman: The Animated Series masterfully delved into the complex and troubled nature of Bruce Wayne, all while remaining a fun and engaging show for viewers of all ages. Over its four seasons, it essentially defined Batman for a generation and continues to be the most iconic version of the character for many today.
Jessica Jones
During the short time Netflix and Marvel collaborated, Jessica Jones was one of the standout shows they produced. This led to a team-up series called Defenders, which unfortunately didn’t succeed. Despite the disappointing crossover, several of the individual shows, like Jessica Jones, were actually quite good.
While Daredevil often gets all the attention for being well-made and perfectly cast, Jessica Jones was equally impressive and deserves more recognition. Krysten Ritter brilliantly portrayed a tough, super-powered detective struggling with addiction and commitment issues, and David Tennant was fantastic as her manipulative ex, Kilgrave. It was a truly stunning show.
The show ran for three seasons, and during that time, Jessica really became a central figure in the Defenders, building strong relationships with her fellow heroes. Despite being a consistently high-quality superhero series, it hasn’t gotten the recognition it deserves, likely because it wasn’t as popular as some of the other shows.
Daredevil
As a huge cinema fan, I have to mention Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix. Honestly, Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio were just incredible as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk – their chemistry was electric! What I really loved was how the show delved into a much darker and more realistic side of the comic book world, something Marvel hadn’t really done before. It was gripping from the very first episode to the last.
The third season of Daredevil left viewers on a cliffhanger as Benjamin Poindexter started his journey to becoming Bullseye. Fortunately, the Marvel Cinematic Universe revisited this storyline in the new Daredevil: Born Again series, which continued many of the plot threads from the original show.
Agent Carter
While Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is often praised as a strong comic book adaptation, it took a while for the show to really find its footing with viewers. In contrast, Agent Carter, which explored the origins of S.H.I.E.L.D. and starred Peggy Carter alongside Steve Rogers, quickly became a hit.
Agent Carter was one of Marvel Television’s early attempts to build shows connected to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, during what’s now known as the Infinity Saga. While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. eventually went its own way, Agent Carter stayed much closer to the established MCU and packed a lot of story into its two seasons.
Justice League Unlimited
Let’s talk about DC animation again. Justice League Unlimited is a truly fantastic series, and many fans consider it the best adaptation of the DC Universe from the comics. Unlike the recent DC Extended Universe, which had trouble with a consistent story, and the new DC Universe still getting started, Justice League Unlimited successfully brought together a huge roster of powerful heroes and pitted them against a diverse array of villains over three seasons.
The show sparked a wealth of stories throughout the DC Animated Universe and boasted an incredibly talented voice cast, considered one of the best in animated television history.
Spider-Man: The Animated Series
Long before Sony’s animated Spider-Verse movies with Miles Morales, or their live-action films about Spider-Man villains, Spider-Man: The Animated Series was already exploring different versions of the Spider-Man story on television.
As a huge movie fan, I think Spider-Man is easily one of the most beloved superheroes ever. He’s been in so many shows and movies, pretty much every kind of story you can imagine! But honestly, the 90s cartoon, Spider-Man: TAS, really nailed a lot of things about the character before he became this massive blockbuster star. It felt special, and it really understood what made Spider-Man great.
The show was full of amazing stories and characters, much like Batman: The Animated Series, introducing many concepts and characters that haven’t appeared in live-action adaptations yet. Even more importantly, over five seasons, it gave us the most well-developed and satisfying portrayal of Peter Parker we’ve seen on screen, in either a TV series or a movie.
Loki
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has created some excellent shows recently, and Loki stands out as a particularly successful one. Despite only lasting two seasons, the series transformed Loki, who began as a villain, into a fan-favorite and arguably one of the most powerful characters in the entire MCU.
Over the course of 12 episodes, Loki journeyed through different realities, battled formidable enemies, and even learned to control time. Adding to the show’s success was Tom Hiddleston’s exceptional performance; he’d spent nearly ten years perfecting the character by the time the series began.
X-Men: The Animated Series
With the new show, X-Men ’97, continuing the story from the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series, it’s important to remember how groundbreaking the original series was. Over five seasons, it built a truly captivating and detailed world based on the X-Men comics.
X-Men: The Animated Series explored the X-Men universe more thoroughly than most adaptations, rivaling even the comics themselves. It told a powerful story of mutants facing prejudice while dedicating themselves to protecting humanity and seeking peaceful coexistence. The show didn’t shy away from complex moral issues, making it a truly exceptional and thought-provoking series for viewers of all ages.
Teen Titans
This animated series is the most recent addition to our list, and while it might be a bit sillier than the others, it’s still fantastic. Premiering in 2003, the show ran for five seasons and uniquely focused on the often-overlooked sidekicks and young heroes, giving them a chance to shine beyond the comic books.
Teen Titans, like many other animated superhero shows, helped introduce viewers to a wider range of comic book characters, both heroes and villains, and connected with its audience effectively. While Teen Titans Go! hasn’t lived up to the original, the first series was full of exciting action and drama, without relying on silly or crude humor.
Superman & Lois
DC has added another successful show to its lineup with the conclusion of Superman & Lois. While the series only lasted four seasons – a result of the new DC Universe initiative aiming for a unified story across different platforms and avoiding multiple versions of Superman – Tyler Hoechlin’s portrayal of Clark Kent and Superman is considered one of the best ever.
This show reimagined the Superman story by moving Clark and Lois, along with their two sons, back to Smallville. It’s a truly exceptional superhero story on television, focusing on Superman navigating the ups and downs of raising teenage children and how the family supports each other through it all.
