Since becoming co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran, he’s planned a series of films, TV shows, and animated projects that all contribute to one overarching story. The DCU began with Creature Commandos in December 2024, followed by Superman, and then Peacemaker Season 2 in 2025. With several projects like Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface releasing this year, people are now starting to wonder what 2027 holds for the universe, beyond what’s already been announced with Man of Tomorrow.
James Gunn hinted at DC’s television plans for 2027 while responding to a fan on Instagram. When asked about a potential second season of the animated series Creature Commandos, Gunn simply replied, “CC and more yes.” This confirms that Creature Commandos Season 2 is still happening and that DC Studios has other shows planned for release that year. While many fans had hoped Creature Commandos would arrive sooner, the news of more DC content in 2027 is still welcome.
A number of new projects are on track to potentially follow Creature Commandos next year. Some are already being filmed, and others are being written quickly enough that they could be ready by 2027.
Which Other DC Shows Could Land in 2027 Aside From Creature Commandos?
James Gunn has strongly hinted that DC will release more than just a second season of Creature Commandos next year, sparking curiosity about their plans for 2027. One likely project is a series focused on Jimmy Olsen. Skyler Gisondo’s performance as the Daily Planet photographer in Superman was very well-received, and DC Studios quickly began developing a show centered around his character for HBO Max.
Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, the creators of American Vandal, are writing and leading the new series, with James Gunn and Peter Safran serving as executive producers. Perrault told TopMob that while the title is still under consideration, the show will be a comedic crime mystery. He explained that it uses the same techniques as American Vandal, but applies them to the superhero genre in a fresh and unique way.
The main villain for the first season is expected to be Gorilla Grodd, a super-smart enemy of The Flash who leads a secret city of apes. The show will follow Olsen and other journalists from the Daily Planet as they investigate people with superpowers, presented as if it’s a real documentary. As of early 2026, the series is still being written, making a 2027 release date likely.
The DC Universe is also developing an animated series based on Mister Miracle. James Gunn announced on social media that this show is officially part of the main DCU storyline, meaning it connects to other projects like Creature Commandos. Tom King, who originally wrote the critically acclaimed 12-issue Mister Miracle comic with artist Mitch Gerads, is leading the show as showrunner and executive producer, and Gerads is also contributing to the animation.
The show centers on Scott Free, who was raised on the harsh planet Apokolips by Darkseid before managing to escape to Earth. He now faces the challenge of preventing a war between Apokolips and New Genesis, all while Darkseid searches for the powerful Anti-Life Equation. Scott’s wife, Big Barda, plays a key role in the story. James Gunn has stated that Darkseid won’t be the main villain for the entire DC Universe, explaining that he’s similar to Thanos and the character has already been used in previous DC films, so they’re holding off on making him the ultimate big bad right away.
A new animated Blue Beetle series is planned for release, and Xolo Marideña will reprise his role as Jaime Reyes. This is notable because he’s one of the few actors from the previous DC Extended Universe continuing in the new DC Universe without being replaced. Developed by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation, the series will continue Jaime’s story, which Marideña has playfully described as “the next craziest anime.” While a 2026 release was hoped for, 2027 is now the most likely timeframe.
