Let me tell you, as someone who’s seen a lot of television, the cast Jesse Armstrong assembled for Succession is truly exceptional – even for HBO. He needed actors who could play truly awful people, characters who were hilarious, cutting, and shockingly crude, but somehow still… endearing. It was a huge ask, but they absolutely nailed it. They brought the Roy family to life in a way that’s both disturbing and completely captivating.

Succession’s Ensemble Cast Makes You Empathize With Terrible People

As a critic, I have to say the cast of Succession truly worked wonders. They managed to make these utterly ruthless, disconnected billionaires – the kind who seem to be actively making things worse for everyone – surprisingly compelling, even likable. Brian Cox is phenomenal as Logan Roy; he’s terrifying and abusive, but also genuinely funny. And Jeremy Strong’s portrayal of Kendall is a masterclass – he’s awful, spoiled, and clearly unfit to lead, yet you still feel sympathy for him. I think the key is the actors themselves; they all possess a natural warmth and charisma that their characters wouldn’t have, and it’s that contrast that makes the show so captivating.

As a movie and TV lover, I have to say the acting in this show is phenomenal. Sarah Snook completely embodies Shiv – she’s icy and intimidating on the surface, but you can really feel her vulnerability underneath. Matthew Macfadyen’s Tom is a brilliant mix of funny and heartbreakingly lonely. And Kieran Culkin? He delivers every single one of Roman Roy’s outrageous lines perfectly, but he also hints at a real sadness behind all the jokes. Those three are incredible, but honestly, the whole cast is amazing. Nicholas Braun as Cousin Greg is hilarious, Alexander Skarsgård plays a truly awful tech guy, and Alan Ruck is fantastic as the eldest brother, who always seemed genuinely interested in making a difference.

Succession’s Cast Has Only Gotten More Successful Since The Show Ended

Since the hit show Succession ended, its actors have continued to thrive. Nicholas Braun has appeared in Cat Person, Saturday Night, and Splitsville. Sarah Snook has starred in All Her Fault and Memoir of a Snail, and recently made her Broadway debut playing Dorian Gray. Matthew Macfadyen has taken on roles like a villain in Deadpool, a husband in The Miniature Wife, and will soon portray George Smiley in Legacy of Spies. Brian Cox has moved into directing with his first film, Glenrothan, and Alexander Skarsgård has been incredibly busy, starring in everything from a romantic biker movie to a gruesome horror film.

The 2025 Best Supporting Actor Oscar was hotly contested between two actors from the hit show Succession: Jeremy Strong, recognized for his incredibly accurate depiction of Roy Cohn in The Apprentice, and Kieran Culkin, who delivered a standout performance in A Real Pain.
