Spoilers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 are below!
The Apple TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is now in its second season, and it seems to be stretching its creative concepts a little too thin. While this season has brought exciting additions like Godzilla, Kong, and a new Titan called X, along with interesting sci-fi ideas like chips to control the Titans, the show’s recent use of time travel is making the storyline unnecessarily complicated.
The first season of the show revealed the Axis Mundi, a unique space that exists between worlds. Because of its intense gravity and the principles of relativity, time moves slower there for anyone who enters. While the show uses some science fiction terms to explain unbelievable events, its early focus on time travel was based on actual scientific concepts. That’s why the new time travel developments in Season 2 are so concerning – they now threaten to create paradoxes and unravel the entire Monsterverse timeline.
Lee Shaw Redefined Talking To Yourself

In Season 2, Episode 7, titled “String Theory,” Kurt Russell’s character, Lee Shaw, is working with his colleague, Dr. Suzuki, nicknamed Zook, to locate Godzilla. Their efforts unintentionally create a radio connection to a mysterious point called the Axis Mundi, allowing them to receive a signal from a younger version of Lee Shaw, played by Wyatt Russell. The show explains this complex event by attributing it to string theory – a concept often called “the theory of everything” because it tries to unite the vastness of relativity with the tiny world of quantum mechanics. It sounds complicated, doesn’t it?
Even when a concept is hard to understand, it introduces ideas that aren’t grounded in real science, weakening the show’s focus on tangible facts. This allowed for unbelievable moments, like old Shaw contacting his younger self. This wasn’t planned – even the older Shaw was surprised – and this conversation could create time paradoxes within the show. Monarch has frequently used time travel, and now they’re exploring ideas that could drastically change the entire Monsterverse.
Shaw Tasked His Younger Self With Helping the Future

The encounter between Shaw and his younger self is already creating potential complications for him. This could change his decisions or his experiences in the Axis Mundi. Although he initially tries to conceal his identity, older Shaw eventually reveals who he is and shares details about Keiko and Hiroshi’s children. He assures his younger self that everything will ultimately be okay, and the fact that neither of them disappeared seems to confirm this. However, even if his own timeline remains stable, Shaw has effectively given his younger self a task that’s changing the future.
To locate Titan X now, the older Shaw instructs his younger self to retrieve a tracking device from the pod he used to enter the Axis Mundi. Young Shaw then bravely attaches this device to the hibernating Titan X, narrowly escaping with his life. This allows Monarch to track the monster in the present day. While this seems like a cool science fiction idea for viewers, Monarch’s actions might have accidentally created a time paradox with potentially disastrous consequences for reality.
Did ‘Monarch’ Create a Monsterverse Time Paradox?

Shaw transmitted data from the future to the past. This data was then used to build a device that still exists and can be tracked in the future. Essentially, the future is demonstrably influencing the past, which in turn alters the present. This raises a puzzling question: how can the future impact the past if it hasn’t occurred yet? What Monarch has created is a time loop, resulting in a classic paradox of cause and effect.
The new show, Monarch, presents a time-travel puzzle similar to the one fans have debated in the Terminator movies for years. It revolves around a causal loop: the characters are tracking a creature called Titan X now because it sent information back in time, allowing them to track it in the first place. This isn’t quite the classic “grandfather paradox” – it’s more like a situation where information creates its own history. If they stopped following the signal, the loop would break, and Titan X would become impossible to find. As long as they continue to follow the signal, the show operates within this self-sustaining loop.
To understand the complex events in Monarch, it’s important to trace the origin of the information loop. While it appears Shaw and Zook’s experiment initiated everything, they likely wouldn’t have begun without learning about the Axis Mundi from young Shaw. So, what truly sparked their connection? Season 1 showed young Shaw’s unanswered radio call for help, and Season 2 reveals someone is finally responding. Is that someone the older Shaw, as the loop requires? Their reaction suggests this is their first conversation, but for the timeline to remain stable, it must always feel like their first conversation, even if it isn’t.
The next episode of Monarch will likely continue the storyline of tracking Titan X using the signal they discovered, which will help the characters progress. This keeps the time-loop story going and raises questions about what happens if time doesn’t flow correctly. If the loop isn’t consistent, it makes you wonder about free will versus fate. Even though Monarch seems to be aiming for a straightforward story, it’s playing with time in ways that could have huge consequences for the entire Monsterverse. This raises the question of how these complex ideas will be explored in the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: Supernova movie. The Monsterverse already has a complicated history, and while Monarch hasn’t broken reality, it’s introducing some ambitious sci-fi concepts that are changing – and possibly fracturing – the franchise’s timeline.
