What Is Pan’s Labyrinth About?

Set in 1944, after the Spanish Civil War, Pan’s Labyrinth (originally titled El laberinto del fauno) tells the story of Ofelia, a young girl who moves to the countryside with her pregnant mother. They join Captain Vidal, her cruel stepfather, who is hunting down rebels in the local forest. While there, Ofelia finds a secret labyrinth and encounters a Faun, who reveals she is a princess from another world. To reclaim her rightful place, she must complete three dangerous tasks.

Guillermo del Toro wrote and directed Pan’s Labyrinth, a film featuring Ivana Baquero, Maribel Verdu (known for Y tu mama tambien), Doug Jones (who appeared in Hellboy II), and Sergi Lopez (from Dirty Pretty Things).

Pan’s Labyrinth Is One of Guillermo del Toro’s Best Movies

Guillermo del Toro’s 2006 film, Pan’s Labyrinth, marked a turning point in his career. Before this, he was known for stylish, independent films and adaptations of comics like Blade II and Hellboy. Pan’s Labyrinth established him as a leading fantasy filmmaker and earned three Academy Awards: for Best Makeup, Cinematography, and Art Direction. Since then, del Toro’s films have consistently been recognized by the Academy.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth is critically acclaimed, earning a 95% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes – making it his highest-rated live-action film there (though his animated Pinocchio scores slightly higher at 96%). Audiences also love it, giving it a 91% positive rating. Critics have praised the movie as exceptional, drawing comparisons to dark and imaginative stories like Alice in Wonderland.

Unfortunately, Pan’s Labyrinth isn’t available on any streaming services right now. But if you can’t wait, you can rent or buy it online, or find it on DVD or Blu-ray—it’s even part of the Criterion Collection! Good news for movie fans: the film will be back in theaters on October 9th to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
